It may seem kind of ironic, but we've started going to the movies for meals more. The prices at "family" restaurants have been stupid since COVID (even fast food), but the theater near us with food service has kept their prices pretty flat to encourage attendance. The net effect is that basic stuff like a burger or chicken fingers is pretty much the same price or cheaper at the theater.

Also, when going to the movies with kids and friends with kids and kid's friends, I don't even consider going somewhere without reserved seats anymore. That feature removes an immeasurable amount of chaos from the experience.

So, I guess the inmates are running the asylum, but they're not doing that bad of a job.

If I bother going to a movie these days, it's right after work. I typically finish at 2:00pm. The first show after that is typically almost empty but I still have to pay for a "premium seat", if I want to sit in the middle area. Garbage. And yes, I've been told to move if I try sitting there, when there are maybe 5 people in the whole theatre.

I went recently here to Avatar 3. Nephew was in town so went with them.

Theres was $8 or 9 bucks mine was $11 maybe lesd anywhere in theater at the counter. If its not full they dont care if you move as long as its not someone's seat (on the ticket).

First 3D movie shrugs. Gimmicky.

To be fair, they're probably operating at a significant loss just showing a movie to that small an audience in the first place.

I do remember the time I went to see The Force Awakens in 3D near the end of its run. I'd seen it in 2D when it first came out, but figured, hey, might as well experience it in 3D while it's still possible. I went to a daytime midweek showing, and was literally the only person in the room.

Nothing in any trailer ever shows that stuff. Why is this held to a higher standard? It's a trailer, meant to get attention, not a vehicle for exposition.

There's definitely a contingent of people who want trailers to be actual plot summaries of the movie. I'm not one of them--I just need to know the basic genre and tone and maybe the audio/visual equivalent of a one-sentence pitch (bounty hunter and baby who looks like Yoda are trying to stop a war is more than enough), and if there's a high concept element, telling me that will likely draw me in. If there are actors like Signourney Weaver who I like, show me them quickly too, as that is likely to grab my attention.

They might well be running at a loss. Or the few people who are there might be helping to pay for the lease of the film for the total run period and not showing it costs them more.
