Olympics 2026 Thread

Random tidbit: So I’m watching this clip of the Georgian pairs skaters using the Mortal Kombat theme for their music, and the announcer says “Mortal Kombat, I’m not sure what that means, but okay…”

And I’m thinking what planet was this dude born on? Is this just a kind of nerd shaming thing?

My assumption would be that they're not commenting on the song per se, but rather why someone would choose it for figure skating. It does give some Harding/Kerrigan vibes.

TBF that song is 30 years old at this point, right? Announcer could just genuinely be ignorant of it.

Possibly, though I’m more commenting on whether someone has heard of Mortal Kombat versus the song specifically. I guess the comment struck me as weird. Like, why comment on whether you know about it at all? You, the commentator, are not the story.

I wouldn't recognise it if I heard it.

Commentators for sporting events do this a lot. Its even worse when they pretend like they do know the topic, they clearly dont. Like how the NFL announcers have to pretend they know all the TV show line up on the same channel they are forced to promote.

It's like a radio presenter--they're not supposed to have dead air. But there's not always anything important to say at that moment, so they just talk.
