Trailer Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Season 1) trailer

The furor I saw was more to do with the idea that she was using "witches" as a term. In some Traditional Christian theology, witches are those who make a deal with the devil for power and become his "daughters."

In a similar vein (this is a D&D site!) they also had Warlocks, which did the same thing, but were basically male witches.

This was the furor of those Christians then, that these books were promoting witches as good things, when obviously, in their minds, from the past, witches were obviously wholly evil. Trying to portray evil as good was a crime in their minds.

This idea of bargaining with a outsider power to gain power for oneself actually can be seen as a basis for the Warlock class in D&D today!

Who could imagine what those during the Satanic Panic of the 80s would have thought if our current Warlock Class (they had a Witch in AD&D, but it was more of a hidden feature than a core class) was front and center back then!
I think using warlock as the male term for witch (traditionally, there is no male term for witch, the term is non-gendered) comes from 19th century American literature and was made popular by the TV series Bewitched and its derivation, the film I Married A Witch.

Warlock actually means something like oathbreaker so the D&D term is ironically the opposite of what it means.

Of course in the WW, witch is used as the female word for wizard, which isn’t right either, but never mind.

Political rant
It’s funny how say your anti new Star Trek you post on the thread and people say why are you even reading this if you don’t like it
No offense but the satan panic seems to be alive with this author. “I would never read this” to my kids or at a library and I bet you would say something to a kid reading it (hey kid she’s anti trans don’t read that book)You sound just like the panic people from the 80’s. We had multi billionaires allegedly having sex with underage kids on an island and allegedly one of those men owns a company that hires basically slaves to make phones that he sells to you but nobody cares. At the same time know kid she’s profiting off of that. Wth cares but yet he kids come play call of Cthulhu. Almost the entire world buys oil from Russia or countries that will throw you off a roof if they think you’re not straight. But lovecraft He’s dead so it’s ok. What!!
People are complaining that she doesn’t allow anyone to use her stuff. Tolkien didn’t do it until Amazon basically through cash same with Lucas whoever. You go to say a daycare and you have Donald Duck wallpaper and Disney finds out there’s a cease and desist letter. This goes with anything. People literally trademark expressions . Adidas can’t go around saying just do it that’s owned by Nike that was created by some person in marketing
Call me old fashioned but I’m kind of disgusted that copyright has ended for certain cartoon characters and now let’s go see Popeyes kill a bunch of kids for a few bucks.
It’s going to be mind blowing if this show becomes the next got or got spinoff or stranger things worldwide

Whataboutism never won any argument. Calm down, please. I made it clear earlier that the validity of this thread is not a topic for discussion.

Honestly, what’s the betting on how popular this will turn out to be? What are the benchmarks these days for recently released multi-season genre shows?

How popular or successful are:
  • Legend of the Seeker (3m viewers)
  • Wheel of Time (10m viewers)
  • Rings of Power (50m viewers)
  • House of the Dragon (25m viewers)
  • Fallout (65m viewers)
Where will it rate on those?

Hugely popular. Americans are weak.

It has solid potential to be big hit. It hit's on nostalgia factor. Generation that grew up with HP books and original movies is generation that now has kids that are in that age bracket first 2-3 books are aimed to. For them, new HP is perfect way to introduce their kids to bellowed franchise they grew up with. New faces of old franchise for new generation of fans.

And to be completely honest, wast amount of HP fans, don't really know or care what Rowling said on Twitter or about her views and agendas. For them, she's just author of bellowed book series from their childhood.

I think everyone pretty much knows by 2026.
You would be surprised. Franchise ended, people grew up, had new interests and didn't follow author on social media. Specially outside of USA. Controversies are mostly on english speaking side of social media, and mostly twitter/x or reddit or specialized forums, it didn't really bleed in on local facebook groups or news.
