D&D 5E (2024) The Versatile STR Fighter: Melee with a Real Ranged Option

It’s probably more accurate to say that for most pure martial classes, barring specific subclasses, the mental stats are closer to tertiary stats than secondary ones.
For the warriors id say
  • Barbarian
    • Primary STR
    • Secondary DEX CON
    • Tertiary INT WIS CHA
  • Fighter
    • Primary STR DEX
    • Secondary CON
    • Tertiary INT WIS CHA
  • Monk
    • Primary DEX
    • Secondary WIS CON
    • Tertiary STR INT CHA

So outside of a Monk, warrior types are shooting Cantrips with a tertiary stat unless subclass bumps it to secondary.

And because STR range sucks, warriors are doing DEX for ranged.

Dex based can get a mental stat to secondary. 14 maybe 16.

Well

For Monk, WIS is secondary.
For Barbarian, they cant be DEX based.

For Fighter, you can be STR or DEX primary and skip the one you dont chose.

Primary 15
Secondary 14
Tertiary 13

before the +2/+1 is only 21 points.

The problem is cantrips on a Martial is kinda bad as a primary option.

Range for a Martial at good quality is
  • Longbow with GWM
  • Heavy Crossbow with GWM and CE
  • Hand Crossbow with CE

Im thinking there might be a shortbow build as well but hand crossbow does sonething similar. Shortbow with hex/hunters mark perhaps.

If you are talking about Barbarian yes, and I will give you most Fighters too, but I do not think that is true for either Rogues or Monks. Usually Rogue and Monk have a mental stat as their highest or second highest ability. I would say that is around 90% for Monks and since 2024 came out about 70% for Rogues.

It is a generalization that is usually true for Fighters if you are not playing one of the subclasses that focuses on a mental stat. But I've seen enough straight Champion or Battlemaster Fighters with Charisma as their second highest ability ahead of Constitution while also dumping one of Dex or Strength to know that it is not universally true.

Part of this is a Rogue or a Fighter is usually the "Face" in a party that does not have a Bard and is sometimes a second Face even in parties that do have one. Those are the only 3 classes that can do that role well. A Fey Wanderer can too, but most other classes are either mediocre or downright bad at social skills even if you invest in Charisma.

I think this is a pure optimization power gamer take.

Few Rogues or Monks are Mental stat primary. That defeats the point of being one.
