I wonder if the whole "this is not a scam" has to do with the screenshot of Whitman's GM Academy that's been circulating online recently. Yes, you too can learn how to use Porkon Cows to better run games.

This would be the surprised face I made if that were the case.

How I would imagine it would go.

Day 1:
"Session Zero is very important! So important that, sometimes, it has been the only session I have needed to run! That is how efficient I am at Gamemeistering*!!!..."
Day 2:
"Timelines are very important! As Gary Gygax famously said, 'You can not have a meaningful campaign if strict time records are not kept.' And since all times and dates in the game are completely made up and arbitrary, that means you are the sole Meister of the Universe**!..."
Day 3:
"Session lime is very important! I prefer it in my Campaign Mojitarita*, which is necessary for a rewarding experience Meistering your Manicipatonts*, which is the Whitman Method reimagining of what the Old School terms "players"!..."

I received an email two days ago letting me know there were updates in the Ken Whitman Kickstarters for Spinward Traveller and Knights of the Dinner Table
....
When your reputation is so bad you have to constantly reiterate, "No, this time I'm serious," and people still don't believe you, it's basically gone. You should create a new identity and start over. Try to be a better person this time around.

I got a similar update for Pencil Dice, which I kickstarted in 2015, eleven years ago. I do have a slight, very grudging, admiration for this level of chutzpah.

Good lord, they could just get some custom pencils off of Etsy, ship them out, and call it a day.

Yeah, it was the early days of RPG Kickstarters and, in hindsight, it's clear he was testing the waters. I remember a lot of people at GenCon were super-excited for it, which, dice I guess? I couldn't muster enthusiasm for the product, but I have never understood how he didn't just get them cheap off Aliexpress or whatever, and then distribute them. Other Kickstarter scams I've been taken by, they at least got a super-cheap almost-what-they-promised-if-you-squint out to me before absconding with the ill-gotten gains.

It's a bit tangential to topic, but idk where to ask, and there are some people here who did kickstarters so i guess they have some inside info. Is it possible that some of those products that are stuck in 5-10 y limbo are just people running out of money to finish it and instead of owning up and saying "sorry, tried it, gave it my best, but i underestimated time and cost of making xy", they keep it in zombie mode out of fear of backer backlash? I mean, not all products use kickstarter as pre order, some are in very early phases of development.

I think people getting in over their heads is definitely part of it, especially early in Kickstarter's existence.
