D&D 5E 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

Whaa... RGFD alumni! I haven't thought of the old newsgroup in ages. Ah, the refined debate... the innovative house rules... it's all coming back to me now. I have a sudden urge to mull some wine. Yeah, it's likely we've likely had this conversation... a couple of times I'm sure. ;)

You raise a good point about Feats being optional, but Skills are also an option so Lore would also have to be off the list. And as Warbringer points out, it is a little odd to see Humans know more lore than other longer-lived races. So you really are left with little else unless you're...

It's not far off though. If a feat is worth 2 ability points and the human is now giving up 4 for it at 1st level, it's probably a reasonable trade. But I agree some of them are... pretty good - I would be fine if they were restricted to non-combat feat choices like Alert, Healer, Loremaster...

+1 to every ability score... doesn't really bother me. A bit bland, but 'eh... The other races tend to have a good array of perks. Not completely balanced mind you, but I think we'll get there. The +1 to 2 or +2 to 1 or a feat idea? I agree they'd need something else. I'd argue you could...

Heh, I think we switched to average die rolls maybe... a couple years before 2nd ed came out. Before that I seem to recall allowing re-rolls for anything that was a 1 or a 2.

If you're fielding armies in the 10s of thousands, then no - targeting the soldiers isn't going to be that big a deal. I play in GH mostly and no one fields armies that large. But even if they did - targeting their supplies lines would still be effective. Hammer away at their food stores until...

Think about it in terms of attrition. Sure it's just 1/day. But 1/day, every day vs an army, town, castle... You could rout armies before they ever reached you. If you were smart you could rout an army before it every properly mustered. Destroy towns, food stores, fortifications...

I haven't scrutinized the spell list, but making sure armies aren't rendered unfeasible or irrelevant should be one of the goals. Just looking at Meteor Swarm with it's 1 *mile* range would allow a wizard to hammer an army (especially one just mustering or on the move)... or a town... or a...

I didn't even give it a second glance as people were using average rolls long, long before it became a rule. I'm willing to bet that if it isn't back by the time it sees print it'll show up as an optional rule elsewhere. But certainly worth making a note of in your next playtest report...

D&D 5E Changes with Equipment, Weapons, Armor.

Still taking in the multitude of changes in this packet, but noticing a few oddities like 1d10 quarterstaves and 110lb(!) plate armor. Also noe that the Greataxe has a whopping crit advantage over a greatsword. I don't mind rolling the bastard sword in with the longsword either. And the katana...

    D&D 5E Multiclass dabbling

Offhand I can't say I'm opposed to the idea, but it would really have to be specific spell feats like we have for the spellcasters. You'll quickly run into balance problems if you don't.

Gorgorath, I think there is a better way to address distinctiveness with particular weapons than creating massive damage disparities then trying to patch them up with maneuvers (and I assume a whole array of skill tricks too for the rogues). Just keep the skill-based damage as d6s, lower the...

I quite enjoyed this Q&A and certainly can appreciate some of the reasoning behind their decisions. Definitely looking forward to seeing how multiclassing works (and I'm sure the CharOps are smacking their lips as we speak... ;-)) I also learned to look at taunt a little differently now and I...

    D&D 5E Money in D&D Next?

I've always encouraged high level PCs to create something for the campaign that would outlive the PC who created it. There were a number of fixtures in my old GH campaign from famous inn/gambling houses to planar trading companies to fortresses to demiplanes that were created by PCs in...

D&D 5E (no more) boring shields

I'd prefer simpler perks as well. I was toying with the idea that heavy armor (and possibly shield) grant a bonus to your Dex Save. Say +1 for most heavy armors and shield, perhaps +2 for plate armor. But being able to Parry missile weapons with a shield is not a bad idea either...
