I can understand this one. Run a high level game with the the "weird" stuff and you will cry yourself to sleep at night and dread the game.

Lets see.... My players have bought books and have let me use them on a semi permanent basis when we play the system. And as for writing adventures, my job subsidides them. I write up tons of stuff between phone calls at work :)

Back in the day WOTC or TSR did release a set of player screens. They were for AD&D and each class had there own. If I recall correctly I think they even came in like a big plastic briefcase thing to carry some books with you.

When we played D&D, level 1 to about 4 was about every game session. After that its was about every 2 weeks or so. We did play every week for about 8 hours. I like it when the party levels and the players like to grow as well.

Last game I ran had one Jedi, 1 scoundrel and one Soldier. If you have ALL combat then yes the jedi will shine but throw in computer checks, searches, spot, repair, pilot and the other people will do just fine. A jedi has to SPEND lots of points on his force stuff leaving very little for him...
