I was running a 3.5 game and we were trying out the three 20s in a row rule and called shots. They were going through a heavily trapped dungeon but the rogue was refusing to search for traps, and one particular player kept having his character run, thinking his saving throws were high enough...

Breaking my lurking for once: The PCs enter into a room/cavern/etc. and find a fountain feed by a waterfall or something similar, or even just a stream that they are heading up, the water has a slightly red tinge, yet does not register as anything if they choose to detect (evil/magic/etc.)...

Keep the crossbow, put a spell on the ammunition? Or, if the Baron has a high bluff, just make them think there's a spell on the ammunition? (The spell being a save or die one, and the Baron tells the player that, though not in so many words.)
