You enter a room in a dungeon, and suddenly the exits ahead and behind are shrouded with flames. Their heat is intense, and your meager elemental wards will not protect you if you try to leap through them. You know a villain has already passed this way, and if you fail to follow him, he will recover a powerful and dangerous magic item, so you dare not turn back.

The only clues in the room are a rack of seven different vials, and a scroll with a riddle. The image below gives you the necessary information. Which vial do you choose?

well I am going to bed..so I dont really feel like explaining my (very brief) though processes at 4 am....

so...I will just say I picked number

3

Alright, first, we know that number 2 and number 6 have to be the same. Since there's only one each of the forward and backward potion, you know that 2 and 6 have to be either both poison or both wine. However, #2 is the largest of the line of vials, and one of the clues says that neither largest nor smallest can be poison. Thus, we know that 2 and 6 have to be nettle wine.

Since the clues say that there is always poison to the left of nettle wine, that means that 1 and 5 have to be poison.

Another clue says that 1 and 7 have to be different, and that neither is the way forward. Since we've already used up both of the 2 nettle wines, and we know 1 is poison, 7 has to be the potion that leads back.

This leaves just 3 and 4. One is poison, one is the way forward. However, again, the clue said neither largest nor smallest is poison, and #3 is the smallest, so 4 has to be poison, and 3 has to be the way forward.

Also, as an added bonus, #2 and #3 both look like someone has drunk from them, such as the villain you're chasing.

Of course, if whoever built the dungeon had any sense, they'd just put poison in all the vials. Shame on you for trusting someone who makes death-traps for a living. ;)
