How can this be good ? MS will jump on the occasion and literally focus on the CRPG aspect of D&D, slowly destroying table top RPG's. You are blind.

;)
But...you're forgetting the XP LAN party editon!
Hate to see what the licencing costs for the server would be though...

Telgian.
(PS. Nice troll. ;) )

This is a good thing. Microsoft will bring stability to the system. We can be sure that all the rules will be properly playtested and balanced before the release. Also, books will be published in binders (as in AD&D Monstrous Compendiums), and updated rules (called service packs) will be available for download from Microsoft's site on a daily basis free of charge. Download the rules update, print it out, replace the outdated stuff, play!

Other benefits include the new "restart game" rule in the DMG, which will enable the DM to avoid player sidetracking and bring the game back to the fold once it gets out of hand. A new product called Player's Handbook Plus!, including numerous essential new tables (eye color, hair color, piercings, tattoos, pets, family, friends, allergies, etc.) that players have always been asking for, will be released by the end of the year.

When Microsoft releases D&D XP, I think I'll install Dungix/Dragix in my home game (yay for Open Source gaming), the last thing I need are players sending me attachments on their character sheets that have viruses, performing actions that crash the game, and having to download patches every month to ensure my game runs properly.

That and having to "activate" my copy of D&D XP even after I buy the dang thing is just going to be a pain, especially when I reconfigure the campaign by installing new optional rules.

"All right folks, roll for initiative... ehr.... sorry, the rulebook is hung up.... let's try CTRL ALT DEL.... hmm... I fear that we are facing a Big Blue Screen... I'll have to restart the DMG, this will take a few minutes..."

So when will they release the microsoft sourcebook about a planet wide benevolant dictatorship that is really an artificial intelligence in an apparently pseudo medieval world. You see, the evil magic users are the only ones with the power to overthrow this benevolant dictatorship, but heroes arise to combat this threat to order and wellbeing. :)
