Disappointing Fantastic Four movie news

Even though he's been locked in for a few weeks, it finallly broke over at Latino Review that 20th Century Fox and Marvel are going with "Barbershop" & "Taxi" director Tim Story to helm the superhero movie based on the comic "The Fantastic Four".

The choice has admittedly raised a few eyebrows, mostly over the fact that a director so notable for lower-budget comedy has been picked to take on the mega-FX filled project which is seen as Fox's tentpole pic next Summer (short of "Star Wars" of course.

Filming begins in August, whilst TV's The Shield star Michael Chiklis is apparently up for the role of Benjamin Grimm (The Thing) and Tim Robbins is being eyed to play Dr. Doom.

Also, scribe Michael France talked about the state of his most recent draft of the script recently to Screenwriter's Voice.
Ugh. From the director of "Barber Shop"? Tim Robbins as Dr. Doom? Ugh.

Naw, man. Can you say Dream Team? :p
Well I was hoping Dr. Doom would be played by Chevy Chase, but I guess Tim Robbins might work. It will only be a Dream Team if they also cast Kraven from Underworld as Reed Richards, Fran Drescher as Invisible Woman, Horatio Sanz as Johnny Storm, and Warwick Davis as Galactus.

EDIT: Oh almost forgot, Rodney Dangerfield as She-Hulk.

Two words: Boo Ya. :D

But seriously. Robbins isn't my first, okay not even my 50th choice, but he's a good actor and can probably pull it off. He can do drama. I guess the question is: Can he do evil?

Well if you've seen Arlington Road you'd know he can definitely do evil, but over the top Marvel Supervillain evil? I just don't see it. Since he'll be covered in a mask it'll come down to screen presence and voice, particularly the latter, and I just don't see Robbins pulling it off. Hopefully he won't get the part.

I'd like to see Dr. Doom played by an actor more along the lines of Geoffrey Rush or Tim Roth.

I don't know about the director (maybe he's a comics fan?). But both Chiklis and Robbins are good actors who have enough range for the parts. So far so good as far as I am concerned.

I was always hoping that Jeremy Irons would play the part. Although, if he could reduce his slight Irish accent, Gabriel Byrne would also make a fantastic Dr. Doom.

I'm not too worried about directors. Ang Lee and Joel Schumacher had established action movie cred, and neither of their comic book films set the world on fire (though it does pain me to mention Lee and Schumacher in the same breath). It does seem odd that they would go with a relative newbie with no action film experience to direct a big summer blockbuster, but maybe the guy's got a take on it that got the studio's attention.

And hey, I like Tim Robbins, although he'd be much better as Mr. Fantastic. And Chiklis IS The Thing.

I think Tim Robbins could make an excellent Doctor Doom...

As for The director, anyone but Roger Corman... :D
