The anuchu are a race of gregarious, forest-dwelling humanoid canids. Their communities are composed mostly of mound houses or dens covered with an overgrowth of vegetation. The anuchu deal with other humanoids in a friendly manner, though they mostly prefer the company of other anuchu to that of elves, dwarves, humans, or halflings. Similarly, most humanoid races find the anuchu talkative and perhaps a bit arrogant as well.
For every five anuchu, there is one with the powers of a 2nd-level ranger. For every 20 anuchu, one possesses the powers of a 2nd-level cleric. For every 50 anuchu, there is a 4th-level ranger, a 3rd-level cleric, and a 3rd-level magic-user. For every 100 anuchu, there is a 9th-level ranger.
The anuchu can speak with most canine animals and even use normal wolves (5-20) to aid them in guarding their communities. Few anuchu wear armor, though all use normal tools and weapons. The anuchu usually arm themselves with the following accoutrements:

Sword and bow 0l-15%
Sword only 16-35%
Bow only 36-90%
Bastard sword 91-00%

Anuchu have infravision (70’ range) and a keen sense of smell (50’ range). In natural surroundings, anuchu can move silently (surprising on a 1-4 on 1d6). Anuchu are able to speak halfling, elvish, gnomish, their own language, and the common tongue.
Anuchu have orange fur covering much of their torso, except for white fur on the chest, hands, muzzle, and feet. They have reddish-brown eyes, pointed ears with black tips, brown padded palms and soles, black lips, sharp canine teeth, and a mane of long red hair (favorite mane styles are braids and ponytails). Most humans who see them think of them as “fox-people.” Popular dress includes tunics, cloaks, and so forth of green, brown, gray, or blue coloration. The average life span of an anuchu is 140 years.

Anuchu Characters

Anuchu leaders tend to be rangers. Anuchu clerics worship ????. An anuchu cleric has access to two of the following domains: X, X, or X.

Anuchu characters possess the following racial traits.

+X Strength, +X Dexterity, +X Constitution, +X Intelligence, +X Wisdom, +X Charisma.
A anuchu’s base land speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision out to 60 feet.
+2 natural armor bonus.
+2 racial bonus to Move Silently checks when in natural surroundings.
Special Qualities: Scent, speak with canines.
Automatic Languages: Common, Anuchu. Bonus Languages: Elf, Gnome, Halfling.
Favored Class: Ranger (?).
Level adjustment +X.

If these guys are gonna be a playable race, we're gonna need to modify 'em a bit. Right now, their stat bonuses are Str +4, Dex +6, Con +4, Int +4, Wis +6, Cha +2. That is definitely worth at least a level adjustment of +1, if not more. Scent is also worth +1 LA, as well as natural armor, giving 'em a total of +3.

You’re absolutely right about the ability scores. When I converted these guys, I was overzealous and inexperienced, so much like we did with the uldra, we will have to cut back on the ability scores.

Natural armor is probably also not necessary – AC8 for 1E converts to AC 12, so I must have given them the +2 to make it so. But, if we keep them with a nice Dex score (and/or give them leather armor), this will take care of that.

However, scent is an absolute must; IIRC it is mentioned in the original description. :)

I agree. Definitely keep scent. I was just mentioning it because it contributed to the level adjustment. An LA of +1 wouldn't be too bad if we can get the ability scores back in line and eliminate natural armor as you suggested.

Redesigning them using the elite array yields something more like this:

Abilities: Str 10 Dex 15 Con 8 Int 13 Wis 14 Cha 12

Plus, forgot to post a picture before.

But I’m not entirely sure that’s the best way to set it up. Let’s see, here are the arguments from the original description as to what we can do with the ability scores:

HIT DICE: 1+2 (suggests a con of 14 or 15)
Missile use (+2 with normal bows) (suggests a Dex of 14 or 15)
INTELLIGENCE: Very to genius (which would be from 11-18 in 1E)
The anuchu are a race of gregarious, forest-dwelling humanoid canids… The anuchu deal with other humanoids in a friendly manner… (so we don’t want to give them a low Cha) … Similarly, most humanoid races find the anuchu talkative and perhaps a bit arrogant as well. (or do we? ;) )
Rangers and clerics are prevalent in their society, which is why I may have originally opted to give them such a high Wis.
Few anuchu wear armor, though all use normal tools and weapons. (yet another reason I wanted them with a higher Dex)

I definitely think high Dex is important. They could have low Cha and still be friendly. The right skill choices could cover that. As we often do with conversions, we could start them at the lowest range of Intelligence, giving them 11. Since Str wasn't mentioned, average should do. Wis is important, but many races that have ranger or cleric as preferred class don't have Wis bonuses (gnolls, for example). They should probably have a Con bonus, though.

Also, since they are considered "gnoll-like", here are the gnoll's stat mods:
Strength +4, Constitution +2, Intelligence –2, Charisma –2.

Based on all that, my personal recommendation would be Dex +4, Con +2, Cha -2. Anuchu are agile and hardy, but are sometimes considered arrogant by other races. This is still unbalanced, and would cost 'em an LA of +1, but I can't really see any other stats to penalize to balance them out.

I definitely think high Dex is important.

me too! :D

They could have low Cha and still be friendly. The right skill choices could cover that.

yeah, I guess so… they are friendly, but they are probably less personable than they mean to be. ;) if we have the ranks for it, we can give them some Diplomacy.

As we often do with conversions, we could start them at the lowest range of Intelligence, giving them 11.

actually, I usually try to give a creature the medium if there is a range, hence the 14 I gave them in the original conversion. But I’m fine with going slightly lower…

Since Str wasn't mentioned, average should do.

average is OK, I guess, but don’t forget that they are 7 feet tall on average…

Wis is important, but many races that have ranger or cleric as preferred class don't have Wis bonuses (gnolls, for example).

I guess you have a point. Maybe the clerics and rangers would have a higher Wis than an average anuchu.

They should probably have a Con bonus, though.

I think so! :)

Also, since they are considered "gnoll-like", here are the gnoll's stat mods:
Strength +4, Constitution +2, Intelligence –2, Charisma –2.

Actually… I added that part. :) notice that there are no references to gnolls in the original text…

Meh, oh well. I would be fine with them having an LA of +2 overall, and that doesn’t change the fact that I think they are an excellent PC race. You see now, I may have overestimated in my original ability assignment, but it wasn’t by much. ;)
