Ok, posted in homebrews…

I’ll spend some time today fixing up the flavor text, and adjusting the combat text and DCs so that it has males and females listed separately. Let me know how it’s looking in the meantime. :)

Shade brought up the idea before of using the following text. I’m thinking this might be best implemented as a combination of combat text and combat flavor text.
“Unlike male krakentua, female krakentua have a limited ability to fly, hovering through the air as if levitating themselves. The female can fly for up to 10 hours before she must immerse herself in sea water for a full day. When flying, the krakentua sheds a trail of dead octopi; the octopi are seldom larger than 3 feet in diameter. It is thought that the krakentua powers her flights by gating in octopi from the ocean and absorbing their life force.”

Maybe we should also give the tentacles some reach? “Seven tentacles extend from its head, each nearly 20 feet long.”

Tentacle slap for attack line?

Combination...yes.

Reach with tentacles...yes.

Tentacle slap as primary attack...yes.

Not getting caught in the female's trail of dead octopi...priceless.

heheh... make that 50 reach with tentacles?

Something along the lines of:

A female krakentua is able to fly, whereas the male cannot. As she flies, she leaves a trail of small, dead octopi that she seems to “shed.” Legends attempt to explain this odd byproduct; tales suggest that the female is able to power her flight by summoning octopi from the ocean and draining their life force. Other than this obscure reference, this phenomenon is a total mystery.

Flight (Su): A female krakentua can hover in the air, as if by levitation. She can fly for a maximum of 10 hours per day, at which point she must fully immerse herself in sea water for 24 hours.

50 reach sounds good.

Flavor text is excellent.

For the fly ability, note that levitation does not allow horizontal movement. I'd propose air walk instead.

Rethinking the reach, maybe 40’ would be better… its standard reach is already 30, but would 20-foot long tentacles really extend that much farther than its arms already do?

Give me an example of how air walk works. :)

40 ft. does make more sense.

Speaking of tentacles, what weapon should we equip them with for the stat block? I was thinking wakizashi, to preserve the OA flavor. Since they are in the SRD, we should be able to use them.

Here's air walk from the SRD:

Air Walk
Transmutation [Air]
Level: Air 4, Clr 4, Drd 4
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Creature (Gargantuan or smaller) touched
Duration: 10 min/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)

The subject can tread on air as if walking on solid ground. Moving upward is similar to walking up a hill. The maximum upward or downward angle possible is 45 degrees, at a rate equal to one-half the air walker’s normal speed.

A strong wind (21+ mph) can push the subject along or hold it back. At the end of its turn each round, the wind blows the air walker 5 feet for each 5 miles per hour of wind speed. The creature may be subject to additional penalties in exceptionally strong or turbulent winds, such as loss of control over movement or physical damage from being buffeted about.

Should the spell duration expire while the subject is still aloft, the magic fails slowly. The subject floats downward 60 feet per round for 1d6 rounds. If it reaches the ground in that amount of time, it lands safely. If not, it falls the rest of the distance, taking 1d6 points of damage per 10 feet of fall. Since dispelling a spell effectively ends it, the subject also descends in this way if the air walk spell is dispelled, but not if it is negated by an antimagic field.

You can cast air walk on a specially trained mount so it can be ridden through the air. You can train a mount to move with the aid of air walk (counts as a trick; see Handle Animal skill) with one week of work and a DC 25 Handle Animal check.

How about:
Flight (Su): A female krakentua is able to move 30 feet per round in the air, as if using the air walk spell. She can use this power for a maximum of 10 hours per day, at which point she must fully immerse herself in sea water for 24 hours to regain the ability.

updating. :) your wakazashi question will be answered at the end of the entry... (though if they are OGL, i can probably make more use of it)
