Started with the ol' Red Box w/ Elmore art. Got the blue, green, black, and gold not long afterward. Picked up a lot of 1st ed. AD&D books maybe a year before the release of 2nd ed.
Got 2nd ed. AD&D & played a lot of it. Still played some basis D&D from time to time. After 3.X, pretty much switched over to it entirely.
Of the "numbered" editions (1st/2nd/3rd), I especially liked versions of the game that were very malleable: Skills & Powers for 2nd ed., or the generic classes of 3.5's UA.
OTOH, I'm still interested in Basic D&D for the relative simplicity of it--where "elf" and "dwarf" are character classes, a sword is just a "sword," and you're either Lawful, Neutral, or Chaotic. Has a strong feel of its own that still has a soft spot in my heart.
