And novel wise... I do not read R. A. Salvatore for the same reason I did not like Frostburn, I find his writing unbelievable. But I do read a lot of fantasy, so it is not just realism.

Don't get me started on Salvatore, I'll jump in the boat and start rowing with you on that one. Right down the river to Offtopicville. :D

*Singing (badly, I'm afraid)*
There's no Earthly way of knowing,
Where this silly topic's going...
But emotions must be growing,
Because the trollers keep on trolling,
And their certainly not showing,
Any sign that they are slowing...

Sorry, I just had a Wonka moment there... :p

The Auld Grump, hmmm, it's still snowing outside my window... does that count as being on topic?

I just asked myself, which one allows for a frost monstreme and things like that?

Hrm. That would be Frostburn.

Crossbow that fires iceciles? Cheesy yes. But totally pulp fun!
Crossbow bolts made of ice that has similar properties to iron? Frikkin rad.

As for Salvatore: I don't find the books to be in the same unbelievability range as frostburn. But then again I am not all that serious about my fantasy so, in that respect I am an easy cheap date.

Aaron.

Crossbow bolts made of ice? Nah. Crossbow bolts made of Ice Nine? Mwuhahaha...

Okay, I'm bumping the thread but only because I'm thinking of buying these books and the opinions expressed herein are extremely useful to me.

I wanted to hate the ice chucker crossbow, but when I actually read it -- something many of "Frostburn"'s critics did not do, I suspect -- it turns out that it's just a jumbo crossbow. It clearly states javelins work with it just fine.

A javelin-firing crossbow wouldn't attract much ire. WotC just tried to tie it into the Frostfell, instead of waiting for whatever the next book that weapons would work in would be.

A crossbow big enough to throw a javelin is called a ballista, it is already in the game as a siege engine. (Or a giant's heavy crossbow...) So it does not thrill me in that regard either...

The Auld Grump

I mean it is called the Icechucker. The javelin part is like an after thought in the description.

And I did read the weapon, in fact I read the whole book. I read every book I get front to back.

I like them both BUT the 1st Edition Wilderness Survival Guide was the best. :)

The only true wilderness guide, all others are pale imitations.

(diaglo, how'd you miss this opening?? You're getting slow...;) )
