What 1E Adventure Am I Thinking Of?

It could also be XL-1, Quest for the Heartstone, which also has an isometric map and a waterfall.

Could be, I never owned that one. As an oh-so-sophisticated 10 year old gamer the idea of a module featuring the action-figure characters struck me as unbearably lame and cheesy (and, to be perfectly honest, it still kinda does...).

BINGO,

I just downloaded both and it's Quest for the Heartstone for the win. While the Dragonlance map is good, the QftH map is something special! Ahhh... the memories come flooding back.

I may just have to go on ebay and try and hunt down a physical copy.

Thank you everyone for your assistance in helping me have a wonderful moment of nostalgia.

Lame and cheesy for sure! In part though, I think this is what makes it so endearing. To be honest, it is really that map that strikes a chord even now. The map work was by Diesel and the interior artwork by Jeff Easley (great black/white ink work, somewhat reminiscent of Iain McCaig's exemplary stuff in City of Thieves/Deathtrap Dungeon). All around fantasy goodness!

Hmm, I guess I might have to go back and fill in that hole in my collection after all...

Yeah, if you get over the action-figure tie-in for XL1, it's actually a really compelling module. Fantastic map/layout, cool tricks/traps, great illustrations... it's one of the modules I most fully scavenged for pieces in my own adventures.

Is Ian McCaig alive? Because if I were an RPG publisher, I'd feature his creepy cool black and white art all over and establish a really great sword and sorcery vibe.

I have no idea about the cover but I thought it sounded like White Plume Mountain. That had waterfall in it and it was situated in a mountain..

He appears to be busy doing concept-design work for movies (including the Star Wars prequels) and undoubtedly earning several orders of magnitude more than he would doing rpg illustrations...

I'd heard he (Iain McCaig) was doing stuff for Star Wars. It looks like he also has a book just out of his work - see Shadowline attachment. A fantastic artist!

His artwork in Deathtrap Dungeon and City of Thieves was really outstanding - iconic, skillfully executed and indeed very sword&sorceryish.
