Something to remember is that he's writing on the Gleemax boards, presumably for Gleemax readers primarily. People who frequent the Gleemax, and the WOTC boards before, likely know what the jargon meaning of Gish is. That you, or I or anyone else who doesn't frequent the boards don't particularly know what that jargon means, just means that he's not specifically talking to you or me.

Then again, I spent a number of years in the military. Try watching a conversation between military and non-military people. I've seen a lot of head scratching going on there as well. Or, try talking about html programing to someone with no computer skills.

Heck, what does TESOL mean? I know. Everyone I work with knows. That must mean that everyone knows don't they? Oh, they don't? Well, then they must not have ties to my field. No biggie.

Don'tcha think that game designers have jargon just like EVERY other field? And that jargon, from time to time, slips into everyday conversation.

It means "Cleric or Druid-Zilla". First time I ever saw it was on the Character Optimization boards at the WotC forums.

It could also be a giant, angry radioactive fish.
Thanks to Avatar: The Last Airbender, I now think of this whenever I encounter the term "Codzilla".

Some jargon is inevitible, but jargon comes in varying grades.

Oh, for sure. I agree 100%

But, just because something is opaque to laypeople does not make the jargon bad.

Gish is specifically, in AD&D, a Fighter/magic user (4/4 even more specifically). Using the term to broadly mean any fighting man/caster seems a fairly direct move. It's not like the term has no basis at all. It's dictionary (if that's the word) meaning is a F/MU. So, using Gish instead of F/MU doesn't seem all that much of a problem to me.

It's no SNAFU I suppose. Nothing to send an SOS over. :D

Hehe, sometimes ENWorld feels like a classroom with a dozen teachers. Thanks fellas. :)

So true :D

Terms come and go and terms that become slanf can change meaning. I would be careful messing with too many slang style words.

but yeah- I am an old fart so of course I would say that.

You know, as a long time gamer, I initially balked at so artificial a term.

But then I thought about it... there really isn't any other term that encapsulates 'mage + warrior' at all well; warmage comes closest but it's two syllables and could just as easily mean 'wizard who specializes in combat magic.' Spellsword implies either a wizard with a sword, specifically, or a reference to a magical sword, or someone who is the sword of their faith through wizardry. And so on.

So I shrugged, and 'gish' it is.

This is too awesome not to start plotting a character around.
Agreed! A Dwarf Fighter (or, if 3e or 4e, Barbarian) just found its way into my future. :)

The reason he is named w00tHaXXor is because that is what he screams as he charges headlong into battle heedless of plans, consequences, or his own safety.....
