D&D 4E 4e houserules

I'd not make any decisions until after I've seen the full rules, but I'm going to be taking a close look at marking, which is (for me) an unwanted extra complication at the moment.

Could turn it into something like "if in a soldiers threatened area you have -2 to attack anyone other than that soldier. Doesn't stack". And yes, if you are threatened by two soldiers at once you get -2 no matter who you attack, as soldiers are nasty working together.

I think the marking thing will become less a problem to keep in mind if there are more "riders" on the effect. Like the Paladins ability to deal damage to a marked foe that doesn't attack him.

The same will probably happen with higher level monsters that have marking abilities. Once the effects of marking are "more in the face" then a -2 to attacks, people will no longer forget them.

I'm going to avoid all houserules unless they are absolutely necessary.

I am frankly quite exhausted with the house rule culture of role playing games, and very much hope that unlike all prior editions 4E is completely playable as is. It really is quite amazing that for 30 odd years we've had d&d that was, at some point in the play experience, critically flawed.

I just want to put my feet up and game with my buddies safe in the knowledge that the pro's have got it sorted.

Ah, no game is good enough to not be house-ruled anyway. (Some are bad enough to just not get played often enough four you to create house-rules). I am pretty sure 4E will not be that different in that regard. But it certainly helps if you really like the foundations of the game and only come to having issues with individual aspects, like a specific power or racial abilities...

Players will assist with marking:

DM: The orc attacks the fighter and hits, 8 hps...
Paladin: Dont forget I marked him last round, damage, yershhhh...

DM will have to track his own marks though.

I'm going to ignore all rules on page 76. I'm also going to change all occurrences of the phrase "less than" in the Advanced Optional Rules Appendix C with "less than or equal to", except in relation to casting spells while prone in an ooze. Every other sentence in chapter 3 will put through Google translate in the three different languages, and then back to English.

Since we can only speculate on the final rules, I can't say anything more substantial than this.

I'm thinking about changing the Mirror Image spell. It's too simple for my taste and I enjoy a little more "complicated" spells. I'll probably make it closer to 3E Mirror Image. Three adjacent images, their AC = wizard's Reflex. Enemy hits an image and image disappears.
But as mentioned, I also think it's a bit too early.

I would've thought you'd house rule the 1:1:1:1 movement and areas stuff, ainatan.

Yes, 1-2-1-2. But since so many powers rely on moving around (Deft Strike) or moving the target (Positioning Strike), those powers could end up a little nerfed. I could also house rule that if you end your movement in the "middle" of a diagonal square you can complete your movement on that square, so if you use Positioning Strike to slide the target 2 squares diagonally, the target can still moves 2 squares, and if you slide the target 3 squares diagonally, he only move 2 squares.
House rule it won't be as simple as we thought initially, and we really need to see the full rules before anything.

Firecubes don't bother me that much, but my provisory house rule would be this:

Now we can really "see" the fireballs inside the affected squares. It makes sense, at least to me.

I'll be running with RAW for a good long time before I start thinking about house rule candidates, at least in terms of mechanics.

Fluff-wise, I might allow tiefling characters to have less, uh, prominent horns and no tail. In fact, I might enforce it.
