[sblock=DM]I think vine 2 just killed itself.

It was at 13 to start with. Bann-ur hit it for 2, it took ongoing 5, and then another 7 for ignoring Jezebel's mark.[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]Would it die before or after it did damage?

If after I believe Alnar is at 5 HP (11-6).[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]The text of Divine Challenge isn't clear either way. It reads "it takes damage... the first time it makes an attack that doesn't include you as a target before the start of your next turn." It's not classified as either a reaction or an interrupt. I would personally rule it as:
  1. Vine makes attack roll against Alnar.
  2. Vine takes divine challenge damage.
  3. Vine dies.
  4. Deal damage to Alnar.
The vine dies before it gets the chance to deal damage. But like I said, the text is extraordinarily unclear on this point. It's just as valid to say "attack" means the whole attacking power, damage included. Some DMs don't like that my interpretation removes the possibility of making a final meaningful attack in defiance of the mark.

One other issue is that Divine Challenge states the damage occurs "the first time it makes an attack... before the start of your next turn." Someone might argue that this means a creature can only ever take damage from DC once, but I think the intent is pretty clear: damage once per turn, before the start of your next turn. Divine Challenge was worded that way in the playtest, and Divine Sanction is worded exactly like that. (The enworld / gleemax threads I've looked at are almost entirely in agreement on this. Otherwise, paladins would be forced to run around challenging different targets each round, and they would be awful against solo creatures.)[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]Dekana, you're right. I forgot about the DC. I agree with you that DC should incur the damage penalty each time it is renewed.

I'm going to rule in this case that Alnar takes the damage, but the vine dies. I'll update the post above.[/sblock]

Alnar pulls the now dead vine away from his body. Tired of the battle moves over to the last vine and taps into his dragon blood, letting out a roar in anger. The vine seems not be scared of his arcane power however, and ignores his outrage.

"Blasted plant is fast!" mutters Jezebel as the vines somehow circle her at incredible speed. She turns to face the hungry plant, swinging her shield over its maw as she goes. She then cracks the whip once more - and once more she hits nothing but air.

Jezebel steps around the vines herself to make a little room for Bann-ur in melee. Finally, she hurls a crude insult at the plant which questions its unusually small vines in comparison to its slain companion. Although the plant obviously doesn't understand her words, the loud noise at least makes her seem larger and more threatening than her allies.

Bann-ur and Enemy Actions

Bann-ur rushes the last remaining vine creature, swinging his maul in a wide arc, but the limber vine is able to recoil just in time, despite its damaged condition.

Compelled by Jezebel's divine challenge, and recognizing the brawny goliath as more than it can chew at the moment, the predatory vine darts back away from Bann-ur and snaps at Jezebel. It seizes the tiefling in its thorny jaws and pulling her back toward the tree in which it is anchored.

If you don't mind, and assuming nothing else swoops down and we are ignoring initiative since the monsters are dead. Alnar will do the following:
[/sblock]

He than goes over and takes out his dagger and cuts Jezebel loose and helps her up. He than stoops down and starts to cut off the head/mouth bulbs of the plants.

[sblock=ooc]
What kind of ritual components do these things give anyway? :)

[/sblock]

Somebody set us up, Alnar says while working on procuring the bubs. We should take a closer look at the chain mail... Anyone want one of these? he says, holding up a bulb. Someone get Ferris up too, will you?

[sblock=ooc]Arrrgghh, Luinnar posted while I was typing mine up. There goes my crit (and only hit of the fight).[/sblock]Jezebel looks annoyed as Alnar frees her from the still-tightened vines. "I would have been fine" she says to the mage. A moment passes before she quietly adds on "Thanks though."

"I'll get Ferris up. We'll need his divine abilities in a hurry, just in case there are any more of these animals lying in wait nearby."

Jezebel walks over to the fallen shifter and kneels beside him. She has to think about how to proceed in reviving him - she hasn't had any real training in the healing arts. His wounds don't seem to be bleeding anymore, so she decides that he just needs something to wake him up. A smelling salt maybe? She grabs the closest stirge corpse and squeezes an amount of blood (some of it probably belonging to her allies) onto her gauntlets. Hoping that will be enough, she waves the foul ichor under Ferris's nose.

ooc: I'll take 10 on the heal check to grant Ferris his second wind. He should now be at 6 hp.

[sblock=ooc] If the fight is over and Jez Heals me, I cast Healing Word on myself twice to get to full hps, then take another short rest and see if anyone else wants healing.[/sblock]

After Jezebels's gentle? ministrations Ferris comes to, muttering "No peace yet..."

As he calls upon Dayna's compassion to heal his wounds, he sits down suddenly on the ground, drained. After a few minutes of rest he looks around at the others, seeing if they need Healing.
