I wish there was a dex based fighter/mage build. But it looks like both EK and the bard variant get heavier armor and encourage high strength builds.

Maybe the sword pact warlock will be able to cast and attack at the same time, while wearing light armor.

It was underpowered but I loved the bladesinger class from 4e, and the spellblade class too. It all stems from the complete book of elves and me power gaming the bladesinger kit, good times and fond memories.

To me the G word is a way of life. I even like the elf race/class from basic D&D that is the O.G.

Any fighter can be Dex-based. Just put on light (or medium, even) armor and pick up a finesse weapon, and you're golden!

Sure, but then class features and sub class features like medium and heavy armor proficiency seem like wastes.

If they could trade in that medium armor prof for the warrior bard into something that would be nice.

Give me a free parry or a +1 AC in light armor, something that encourages me to play a finesse based character, because without that might as well go heavy armor and high strength and use a two-handed weapon will do more damage and have a higher AC that way. More than likely, still need to see the final PHB, to me as much as I want to play a finesse based fighter/mage if the numbers make a strength one more attractive numbers win over my desire to be finesse.

You don't need encouragement to play a finesse-based character. the trade-off youll be getting for not putting on heavy armor is that you won't have to focus on Strength, instead boosting your Dex, which will govern your melee and ranged attacks, damage, initiative, stealth and a very common saving throw.

Legend
Mage Armour is an abjuration spell so a Eldrich Knight can take it, he loses nothing for not wearing heavy armour.

And thier are incentives to choose dex over strength, Archery, Multiclassing into rogue, stealth and inniative.

Edit- Klaus must of taken levels in Monk: Way of Shadows because he ninja'd me!

Yes you can cast mage armor but then you are down a spell slot or two a day.

Attack bonus is the same so no comparison.

Damage, so far from what we have seen the two-handed strength based fighter types win out in DPR hands down.

Initiative, only matters round 1 since it is a loop, if initiative is rolled every round it might matter more but it is not.

Ranged attacks, that is what your spells are for.

Stealth and other rogue skills are nice but you are not the skill monkey you are the fighter/mage guy.

The best reason given so far to me is Dexterity is one of the best saves in the game.

But in a white room if the DPR of a two-handed strength based EK is better than a finesse rapier using EK, I will pick the strength based one every time. All I am asking is for the game to give me a numbers reason to play the character I want to play which is a studded leather/chain shirt wearing rapier using guy who can cast a spell and swing a sword in the same round.
