Also, note that the tweet confirming that Doomspace is not Athas said it’s “kind of“ like Athas. This suggests to me that there had been sweeping changes planned, which is probably why they ended up deciding not to to make it Athas in the end.
He clarified that he meant that the Eye of Doom (the black hole?) was like a "dark" sun?

Sure, but my point is, he said it isn’t Athas, but it’s sort of similar. If the “Doomspace was going to be Athaspace but changed at the last minute” theory is correct, I would expect someone reading it to think it was more than just sort of similar, unless the changes to the setting were quite significant, or I guess if they had enough time to cover up a lot of the similarities.

Well, I mean, part of it might depend on familiarity with the original: I'd they don't name drop Dark Sun, Athas, or Dragon King's, a desert planet with arenasand psionic lizard people can seem pretty generic-ish.

It wasn't necessarily inaccessible. They left it to the DM to determine why Spelljamming was unknown on Athas.

"Athas. The world of the DARK SUN™ campaign is not on the spacelanes where Realmspace, Krynn-space, and Greyspace can be found. No spelljammer travels its skies; no ancient tome tells of the routes to its crystal sphere. Whether it is unreachable by spelljammer or merely so far from these worlds that any journey would take lifetimes is unknown. The current inhabitants of Athas have no knowledge of spelljamming. There is no way to know whether the closely guarded library of some sorcerer-king conceals an ancient tome revealing the basic concepts of wildspace. Even if such a tome were found, the defiling power of such powerful magic would certainly wreak havoc on the fragile balance of life on Athas."

What if they make it that DarkSun takes place in the far past, and Doomspace is after the star finally went belly-up. Athas is gone. But some of our favorite DS creatures have survived. It's "unreachable"... without a time machine. (Or powerful chronomancy).

That would certainly fall under the category of advancing the metaplot in a way I think a lot of players would be quite upset with. “That setting you love? It’s gone now. Don’t bother hoping for us to revisit it some day, because it was canonically destroyed.”
