Binged the first 3 episodes last night. No spoilers.
I like it but don't love it. The production design (and production value) is incredible. The performances are uniformly excellent.
The writing and directing is shaky, I think. The games are violent, but rarely sadistic, which the show frequently is. The games are cynical about institutions but generally optimistic about human nature and individual people; the show feels cynical about humanity on every level (which is not surprising coming from the Westworld show-runners).
There are what feel to me like too many "do you get it, dumb audience?" moments, but in fairness some of those might be less grating if you're not familiar with the games - but some would be grating regardless, I think.

While they avoided a straight adaption of the games, it feels like they managed to capture as many story beats as possible.
Oh, for sure. At least based on the first episode, it is the right kind of adaptation: true to the source material in tone and style, while doing something new with it.

Yeah, I think the issue is that the successive games carry over a lot of the same kind of story beats from game to game, so its only appropriate to do it in the show.

I finished the series already. I really enjoyed it. Definitely falls into the camp of good video game adaptations along with the Last of Us, Arcane, and Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
