But as soon as that thought pervades her mind, do those same enemies show up on the doorstep of her very lair! The Bantouk-trained psion delivers a terrible blow to her inferno-laden form. She reels desperately against the attack, but the Primordial-sponsored Efreet cannot shake it!

Before acting, PA'AVU takes a quick moment to survey the scene and strategize, taking in the various components and adversaries before her.
Then ... something unexpected happens. The goliath feels the touch of two strong yet gentle hands touch her immense shoulders, hands that Pa'avu instinctively understands are not physically present but are here nonetheless. Encouraged, she breathes deeply into her l'pahb'gin, allowing herself to become one with the earth, with Stoneroot, and for her stoneskin to harden protectively. Despite the immense heat in this lower chamber of that earth, the goliath feels that connection more powerfully than usual. It is as if she were freed from the bounds of men. <Ah, that's who is centering me: thank you, goddess, for your aiding of me and of Him,> Pa'avu murmurs. Then the Stoneblessed goliath acts.
She quickly avoids the elemental guarding the ritual circle to enter the profane space, turning back to give it a punishing blow and to shove it to the ground. The necrotic energies the Aspect has been fostering wreathe around her skin without gaining purchase: Stoneroot's strength holding her safe ... for the moment, at least. He helps those who would help themselves, empowering their victories for Him. Thinking about all the indignities that Stoneroot has had to endure from Vezzuvu, Pa'avu transforms the necrotic attack and channels it into the very rage of the venerable K’mniich’ himself--his own Death Spirit--so that--as His surrogate--she can right the wrongful death given to Him by his ancient enemy.
Then, turning to the Duchess herself, the goliath cracks her neck and smiles at the look of stunned astonishment on the djinn's face. Being so close to each other, there is no hiding behind her flames. Then, again, Stoneroot's Champion moves into purposeful action: she proceeds to deliver Stoneroot's punishment to Vezzuvu's Living Flame and forcefully--painfully--propels the Duchess of Cinders out of that vile ritual circle.

Rietka and Yazdan, THE WARDENGUARD, enter the fray with Yazdan's roar of "For Bantouk!" as he charges, spear outstretched, across the magma-pitted theater. Rietka is close on his heels, and it's a good thing, too, for the aging warrior is not quite as nimble as he once was, and so his attempt to carefully navigate the magma eruption between him and the Duchess of Cinders goes awry, a hot plume of noxious smoke, ash, and molten rock spraying up from the precarious surface.
The Bladeling pushes the scorched and startled man forward with a grunt, "to the attack!"
Still smoking from the eruption's effluvium, Yazdan recovers himself and thrusts his spear through his reeling foe.

As the ritual circle's necrotic energies pour ineffectively over PA'AVU's stoneskin, the Death Spirit of the venerable K’mniich’ awakened within her becomes enraged. His verdant energy surges through his Stoneblessed goliath's arms into Velmech'ti, causing the magnificent blade's sweeping arc to deal harsh damage to the warriors of His ancient and foul Adversary. So harshly is the punishment meted out against them, the djinn and her fiery elemental ally are both shaken to the core, standing bloodied on the field.
Pa'avu then presses forward the advantage presented to further the assault on the Duchess, ready to refuse reentry into the circle. Again, the hunting instincts of her Beloved Hound kick in, perhaps ignited by the smell of spilled blood. Eagerly, Hazard leaps forward to attack ... perhaps too eagerly. His snapping jaws--just--miss the djinn. Then Hazard stops short in confusion: in front of him, he witnesses his own failed attack. And then, in the blink of his eyes, his teeth are tearing at the flesh of djinn. While her Hound is playing with his prey, the Stoneblessed goliath breathes into her l'pahb'gin, becoming a channel for the Power of her Mentor's Verdant Presence, allowing its healing energy to seep deeply into the wounded Earth. The one thing that HAZARD knows is that in order to protect his Beloved, he must be alive. But how? After receiving a beating that leaves him burned and battered, the poor beleaguered Hound desperately wants to find a hole to crawl into and lick his many wounds. But he cannot.
Nearby, there is a beckoning from a warm, glowing circle. Somehow, Hazard senses protection and replenishment from it, just like his dream-memories of swimming with his litter mates in that pool of water, so long ago, before his bondage by that vile human his Beloved delivered him from, now a bad--horrible--memory. The Hound begins to crawl toward the circle, answering its call of welcome.
Entering the circle feels strange yet familiar, as if he has been here before. Suddenly, the landscape seems momentarily to change into the shore of that long ago pool, then--just as suddenly--Hazard returns to the field of battle, now facing the dragon's backside. Head swinging wildly this way and that, the hound sees the companion of his Beloved nearby. Turning back, he sees his Beloved across the field, barely visible beyond the great wyrm, despite her size.

The Merchant Prince's lungs burn at the sulfurous emanations from below. The heat overwhelms. His comrades reel, losing their struggles against the Duchess and Vezzuvu's minions. And Death Itself looms beside him, scythe at the ready. All seems lost.
In what could be a final act of desperation, CHANVATI draws the byeshk dagger at his side. It proved vital against the agents of Caiphon; perhaps it can strike true against these formidable foes!
Activating the power of his magic bracers, the Psion slashes at the Aspect of Nerull with potency, and his comrades take note of his bravery, roused by his example and restored in their fighting spirit. Then he calls out, begging favor from an unexpected source: "Stoneroot, supreme among Primal Spirits! On behalf of your devoted servant, Pa'avu, I implore you to bless our fight against your enemy, to consecrate these grounds and dispel the threat against the city above!"
Edj'd'ha aiid Y'zlv'dahi, meanwhile, taunts the Magma Elemental, frozen in time. "Creature of lava and flame, why don't you heed my mesmeric words and stroll away from this fight? Oh, you can't? Time not moving for you? What a shame." The ancient wyrm guffaws at its drollness.

<Very well>, thinks the molten-fleshed DUCHESS OF CINDERS. The Efreet shows her teeth, a blaze behind them and licking out between them. Her flameshrouded blade flashes and it forces Pa'avu back and away to escape the mortal sting of it. The goliath warrior keeps her feet, but she finds the necrotic wasting of the Ritual licking at her earthen flesh.
In a burning flash, Vezzuvu's chosen takes to the air, accepting the Green Dragon's poisonous jaws lacerating her flesh before she escapes.
"You've served me well minion," she regards her magma elemental as she drops a cascade of cinder atop it and several of her enemies. The magma elemental turns to stone as the heroes fight off the paralyzing impacts of the volcanic pyromancy.

There is something more than fire and ash that assaults THE WARDENGUARD. Foul magicks permeate the Duchess's pillars of cinders, slowing and hindering Rietka and Yazdan's movements. The two struggle to step outside the necromantic ritual circle but cannot. It is all Yazdan can do to loose a javelin, take aim through the melee, and hurl the missile fruitlessly in the direction of the Duchess. With the quick decisive mind of the warrior that she is, PA'AVU analyzes the field of battle and chooses her actions. The Wardenguard have been a most reliable pair of allies, and she sees a way to at least give them a fighting chance, while continuing to distract their combattants away from Chanvati ... as much as is possible. She gives a sharp wolf's howl, catching their attention and gesturing a way out of the poisonous circle.
Then, leaving them to protect themselves and fight as the veterans they are, the Goliath follows her Hound's example and utilizes another of Avandra's divine Runic Circles. After a mind-spinning journey through a fantastic landscape, Pa'avu finds herself just where she wants to be: at the heart of the conflict, protecting her gosb'tar and allowing him to be the brain to her brawn.
Giving a thunderous howl, the Stoneblessed warrior of Stoneroot calls upon His power to sharpen Velmech'ti's aim and to bombard the ghostly Aspect with painful cacophony. Pa'avu's forehand proves sloppy, but her backhand delivers an attack that is so powerful that it overflows onto the late Duchess's allies, killing one and shoving the other backward, directly into Pa'avu's own Verdant zone. The goliath's chin rises in sharp approval as she watches magma erupt over Nerull's Aspect when it stumbles away from and into the hazard.

Let us return to the surface before," she pauses, with a sideways glance at Yazdan, coughing furiously as he grips his spear with both hands, "before something permanent happens!"
Chanvati's face is impassive. A pause turns awkward.
"Yes, Rietka. You are, of course, correct. My, our battle with Death was never to end here in any event. For now, Bantouk is safe. Let us make our way from these depths with all haste!"

Despite being battered and burned yet again, HAZARD THE HOUND has no intention of going doing without a fight. He narrows his eyes at the elemental threatening him. Growling, the Hound snaps his jaws at it, despite the intense heat. Frustratingly, the form of the mercurial creature morphs itself away from his teeth. Preparing to try again to tear at its flesh of magma, Hazard hears a sharp whistle.
Turning his head, he sees his Beloved gesture at him to leave the fight and the battlefield. With another searing glance at his opponent, Hazard steps back and turns away, obeying her command with some reluctance.

Time will not heal all wounds, Chanvati thinks to himself. Gasping for breath as the burning fumes continue to sting his lungs, he nevertheless manages a feeble chuckle.

And with that warning, the Psion folds spacetime in upon itself. The Magma Elemental is shunted away, and Chanvati's form reapparates, but beyond the chamber's entrance, to safety, and even further out of step with time.
With its mortal nemesis defeated, Edj'd'ha aiid Y'zlv'dahi uses its mesmeric gaze upon one of the Duchess's lesser servitors, luring the Magma Flinger into the lingering necrotic energies of the Ritual Circle, where it succumbs to those foul magicks. Its vengeance enacted, the Dragon prepares to fly off and make good its own escape from this place.

As her allies are all making their way to the tunnel, PA'AVU stands her ground. Through the eyes of his Stoneblessed goliath the Death Spirit of K’mniich' stares into the eyes of the Aspect of his Adversary, momentarily holding it in time. The Aspect's focus remains on the goliath as she shifts around him to a more strategic position. Then its gaze seems to widen as she channels her rage through her trusty Velmech'ti and shoves him away from her.
As Pa'avu activates for the second time one of Avandra's protective runic circles, her voice is heard, resounding from deep within her, but the words are not her own: "You think yourself Master of Death, godling, but soon you shall know what Sleeping Rocks dream." With that, the goliath disappears, only to reappear within another circle.
Stoneroot's warrior--lately favored also by Avandra--takes but a moment to catch her breath, before she slides away, into and through the tunnel's entrance, like quicksilver.
