D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

Wizards of the Coast is playtesting the Psion class for Dungeons & Dragons. Today, Wizards of the Coast provided a new Unearthed Arcana for the Psion, a new class for the current revised 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons. The playtest includes base class rules plus four subclasses - the body-shifting Metamorph, the reality warping Psi Warper, the offensive-minded Psykinetic, and the Telepath.

The core mechanic of the Psion involves use of Psion Energy die. Players have a pool of energy dice that replenishes after a Long Rest, with the number and size of the dice determined by the Psion's level. These psion energy dice can either be rolled to increase results of various checks/saving throws or spent to fuel various Psion abilities.

While the Psion and psionics have a long tradition in D&D, they've only received a handful of subclasses in 5th Edition. If the Psion survives playtesting, it would mark the first time that Wizards of the Coast has added a new character class to D&D since the Artificer. Notably, the Psion and psionics are also heavily associated with Dark Sun, a post-apocalyptic campaign setting that many considered to be off the table for Fifth Edition due to the need to update parts of the setting to bring it current with modern sensibilities. However, the introduction of Wild talent feats (which replaces some Origin feats tied to backgrounds with psion-themed Feats) in the UA seems to suggest that Dark Sun is back on the table.

Yeah, I think the is a lot of Grog bias around Dark Sun on this forum. With the current generation of players, there are a lot finding inspiration in anime. Some of this relates to the current popularity of Eberron, the most anime-ish of the traditional settings. I could see a psionics-focused book being set in Eberron if not generic. But I could easily see a new setting that was inspired by Last Airbender or Akira. It's time we had something completely new designed for the current generation of D&D players.

Green and Yellow. No show stoppers.
I am glad Green allowed for "tweaks" which could then be mentioned.

Actually, I think this was best survey so far, in the sense that I felt I meaningfully could communicate how I felt about an item.

The Yellow was clear, major revision. Versus neutral as Not Sure.

Heh, Red still didnt clearly say "kill the project" as the designers seem to think?

But the positive Green and Yellow feel informative.

All Green, with occasional Yellow for a handful of specific minor items.

Happily, there were no Red.

I like the UA Psion.

Heh, if they asked me specifically about Costly Material components, I would have put Red.

But as part of spellcasting, I do like the Psion as a normal caster. The critique is about certain specific spells that need to get rid of their Cost Material component. I was able to mention that. The class is fine.

It'll be interesting to see where they put this. Dark Sun is a possibility, but also not a requirement. I don't imagine it'll be part of FR or Eberron, but it could just be an independent product (here's a book with the psion and a bunch of psionics). Could also be something a little fresh (which might be exciting!).

I know the vast amount of my objections were to the spellcasting aspect of the psion, which I can't see them backtracking on now because enough people either actually like it (green) or are okay with it (yellow).

It matters not to me. I loved the Psionicist in 2E, but won't bother playing one in 5E as they have it. I think a hybrid of the Mystic and Psion with the idea of "Battle Master" of non-martials with magical powers but not spells would be my personal ideal.
