Spoilers The Doctor is. . . WHO?!

Looks cool, and I must get D+ back so we can watch the whole run. But I suspect it’s a stunt reincarnation like the return of 10 - Piper might get a Christmas special and even a couple of episodes but she’ll then step aside for whoever is next. I’m hoping for an Asian woman.

(Option 2 - at some point, it is revealed, every sapient being becomes the Doctor at one point. It’s why he has so much empathy.)

From what was written in the other thread, Gatwa apparently didn't renew his contract once his two seasons were up. The most likely reason is that he's a rising star, and it doesn't seem things are determined about the next season yet, and he didn't want to be locked into keeping an open schedule just in case the BBC, RTD, and Disney get their act together. This is likely the reason why the finale felt so disjointed – they had to do a bunch of rewrites and reshoots in order to get to his regeneration.
Haven't seen it, but a Who enthusiast. Why did he regenerate?

Abbreviated version: The Rani and Conrad (from an earlier episode) had created an alternate reality where, among other things, the Doctor and Belinda were a couple with a child, who happened to be Poppy from last season's Space Babies. When the timeline was restored, the child disappeared. So the Doctor regenerated and channeled regeneration energy into the Time Vortex in the TARDIS to nudge reality back to where Belinda was the mother of Poppy again, although now with a different father.
