In every campaign i played in last 8 years, my brother buys one of these as soon as his character can afford it. Then he does "pimp my carriage" and adds stuff to it.

Besides mobile home, most of characters i played were wealthy hobos. We don't really bother with that stuff.

Like the one to beat for me is the Pillars of Eternity castle: Caed Nua. You get it: you rebuild it from its ruins and build amenities; you have a massive megadungeon underneth that led to its ruin; you have people showing up asking for help; the former owners claim rights; and when the legal case goes in your favour, he raises an army. That's a full campaign in itself.

For the most part, tavern rooms or camps. Every game I have been in, the moment the party tries to settle down, the plot takes it somewhere else. Even when the plot has us build a stronghold/fort/etc, rare that we really get to live there. When that plot segment is resolved, back on the road again. One campaign, now on hiatus, we did build a compound that is ours. Serves as a multi party HQ. But we rarely are there. Too busy adventuring.

Generally my players don't bother. They are on the road too much or they prefer to take over rooms at the inn.

In my Sunday night Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign, they started off staying at the local inn before they built bastions. Now that the campaign is moving away from Saltmarsh for a while I guess they will be wanderers.

When I play I tend to just pay some gold out to cover inn rooms, bathing and food/drink.

For my group, it's very common for a quest-giving-entity to offer the group temporary housing. This could be a wealthy patron with a large house, a town mayor who sets them up at an inn, whoever lives in the castle, whatever. In any case, this allows for the players to have a defined safe haven they can return to during longer missions without having to concern themselves with constantly dealing with housing issues.

That only works while the heroes are local, of course. Most missions require some amount of travel. So then you're back to inns, taverns, camping, etc, while on the road. Or finding the safest corner of the dungeon.

I'm more for Pillars 2, where you have mobile HQ.
