Excellent feedback. This helps round out my thoughts. Just to be clear, I think my example of point buy was bad. We use the 35 points for ability points. So to lower a +1 LA it should go down to 27. Good. Now, should I allow folks to buy down there LA by rolling 3d6 instead of 4d6?

For the reasons you so accurately point out and the fact that magical armor enhancements add to Armor defense bonus and not DR, I think I will keep it AR and not DR. Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Our group is considering going to a Class based DEF Bonus plus Armor as DR model (all from Unearthed Arcana). Normally, Mage Armor is +4 to AC. Under this model I would rule that the +4 would go to Armor Bonus but should it be split between Armor Bonus and DR?? +3/1/-??
