Designers: Say Yes to Bards! Save the Class

Long live the Bard! I think the 3.5 Bard is the best bard yet.... just hope they continue to make it better and better. -nate

    Design & Dev: Monsters (DRAGONS!)

Wait, I don't understand. If combats take too long now, and this will speed them up, why does it make you leery? Isn't it exactly addressing the problem you've had with 3.x? I know I'd really love to be able to get more than one fight done in an hour and a half.... and that at 4th level. I...

    OMG Fireball, Noooooooooooo!

Awesome. That's one of the major problems with higher level adventures. As for fireball not doing 1d6 per level... who knows. I'm sure they wouldn't mess with it unless there were some good reason. Here's my thinking - the people who are writing 4e love D&D, and they're going to do their...

    Gno more gnomes?

There was a designer who said that we'd be losing at least one race in the PHB. The Tiefling is going to be core, but the gnome and the half orc need to watch their backs. There's no official announcement as to the which one it is, but most people are betting on the gnome, since we don't...

    Prestige Classes gone?

They're not out, but they'll be significantly changed.... sounds like they might be add-ons you can give your character as you level up. The example given that you don't stop being a barbarian when you become a frenzied berserker, you're still going up in barbarian levels. So, maybe they're...

One Level Scale to Rule Them All?

Nah. Saying "you can be 25th level when you cast spells" is a lot different than "Wizards will be able to cast 25th-level spells." The level of the spell has always been different from the level of the caster and that statement pretty clearly attaches the concept of the level to the spell and...

    D&D 4E 4e Classes

If by warlock you mean something like a sorcerer but more differentiated from a wizard, then yes. Otherwise, yes, that looks like a very likely list <edit> plus barbarian as a base class. Sorry, I don't like it either, but it's been mentioned a couple of times</edit> And no, they're not going...

    D&D 4E Alignment in 4e

See, I think this is too bad. The black and white world of D&D alignments made for very clear cut bounds, made the battle between good and evil right there in your face. My holy mace fighting against your unholy longsword. I will agree that detect evil is not a good spell to have in a game...

    Saga skills?

Yeah, but the soldier's bonus feats are a lot more spread out that they would be in D&D. In D&D there's basically martial weapons and simple weapons. so, either you have the "I know martial" feat, or you don't. The armor feats are a little more... you can have light, medium, or heavy...

    D&D 3E/3.5 The design processes from 2e to 3e, 3 to 3.5, and 3e to 4e.

I think you're mourning for something that's not dying. They are still going to have guidelines about what constitutes a good battle for a level X party. I think they've even mentioned that in general, 5 level x monsters will make a good fight for 5 level x PCs. And by good fight, they mean...

One Level Scale to Rule Them All?

Could be. Fireball moved to 6th. Basically all the "just a little too good for this spell level" spells can get bumped up a notch. I hope there are a ton of really cool tricks straight spellcasters can do. I always thought that they kind of got the shaft, because all their tricks are spells...

What size will the new books be?

Please, for the love of all that is holy, do NOT make these books Saga sized. That would just be a huge insult. From the cover art, it looks like they'll be standard size, but it's of course very early to tell. -Nate

    Saga skills?

Just seems like taking a level of rogue at first level will give you a big benefit for the entire life the character, whereas taking fighter first.... kinda doesn't. Yay, 12 hitpoints more than the rogue got... those get lost in the shuffle in the first 10 levels, but the rogue's skillpoints...

    speculation - derived XP chart

ok, so back to charts.... this uses the 300XP for a CR 1 fight from 3.5, translated to 4e's "encounter with 5 monsters of equal level", and assuming 1000 XP for level 1, and assuming that a single level 5 guy will be a similar challenge for that group, and therefore should be of equal value...

    Saga skills?

Ug, that's one of the things I hate about star wars d20 - not getting all the fighter's proficiencies when I took him. Maybe they'll skip that in D&D, or at least tone it down. As for the skills... bleh. If you want to be skillful, your 1st level has to be skillful, or you have to waste a...

    speculation - derived XP chart

pg. 48 DMG 3.5 - "A monster's Challenge Rating (CR) tells you the level of the party for which that monster is a good challenge." So, one CR 1 ghoul with 13 hitpoints and 14 AC is supposed to be an EL 1 challenge... an "average fight" for this party of 4 stalwart 1st level adventurers? that's...

One Level Scale to Rule Them All?

I can understand that at 20th level you'll never cast Burning Hands. If it ever gets to the point where you're thinking about casting Burning Hands, you're probably already dead. And I do think they'll address that. I'm guessing that most of your vancian spell slots will be for your highest...

    How I'd re-work armour in 4th Edition D&D

It's not counterintuitive. And it's not literally making you harder to hit. Armor doesn't affect your touch AC at all. You get hit a lot, they're just blows that hit your armor. Blows that manage to sneak in between the plates of armor actually damage you. These are the blows we call "hits"...

    Saga skills?

Ok, so now the $10,000 question - how do mutliclass characters work? If I take a level of fighter as level 1 and the rest as rogue, am I screwed? How about vice versa? That's the one thing I couldn't figure out about a system like that. -Nate
