Dealing with equipment dependency in D&D

So do you give your players the free run of all DMG items as abilities or do you have a system, is it subject to DM approval? If so what are your guidleines, if any? :)

Dealing with equipment dependency in D&D

And what is the benefit of a hodgepodge of items IYO? :) Personally I've found heroic paths in Midnight a wonderful way to lift the game away from the eternal lists-keeping and gold-counting and focus on the characters instead. I'm currently working with one of my players to tailor one...

    Midnight with different rules?

Heh. Great minds and all that ... Ah, interesting alternative. Defensive stance might not work so well for the greatsword-wielding, medium-armored PC in my group because she has to be able to retreat behind the shield fighters when badly cut up, but it certainly fits the theme of the path...

    Midnight with different rules?

:) Cool. We have found that Midnight can be a really inspiring setting. Speaking of rules tweaking, I wasn't too sure how a number of things were going to work in play so I told my players that I was running the game in playtest mode and might be changing a number of rules as we went along -...

    Midnight with different rules?

He wasn't technically my Shadow Walker Wildlander, he was a PC in the game I run. That scout died after about one hour of play in the very first session when he failed to bluff his way past some town guards and made the very bad mistake of letting them know who his friend in town was ... By...

S'mon has said it all. :)

    Midnight with different rules?

I haven't made an actual breakdown, no. We're pretty much staying away from the paths in the player supplement though, there are some bad ones in there (Painless especially, yup) - plus OTOH a wide selection of paths with a use limited to specific types of territory, which kinda limits a...

    Midnight with different rules?

Wow, somebody else enjoys the Story Hour, how cool is that? :D Thanks for letting us know. Here's a link to our campaign forum on randomlings in case you'd like to check it out. It has my growing set of Midnight house rules, players' strategic discussions, the cast list of PCs (current and...

    Midnight with different rules?

Hi rl - sounds as if you're going to have fun! My group and I have been playing Midnight (or my increasingly modified version of it) for half a year now and are enjoying it a lot. S'mon (hiya! :) ) has already reported bits from our game above. I'm not familiar enough with Monte's AU magic...

Any module/sourcebook made you go "Drop everything I want to run this right now?"

Midnight. As I run it, I change more and more things to suit my tastes and those of my group, but I owe my original spark of inspiration for this campaign to the Midnight campaign setting book. Conan RPG was pretty cool too, although not to a degree of making me want to drop other stuff...

    Let's ban Teleport!

If that happens to suit the flavour you're aiming for, go for it. Personally I've always found the divide between arcane and divine a rather laboured one - for me that's the first thing that needs to be dropped in adapting the PHB spell system to a setting and giving it flavour and style. :)

How do you live D&D? Alternate reality or heroic tale?

I voted Heroic Tale. Both as a DM and as a player I love cool scenes, larger-than-life characters and furious action. I also find that a risk of failure can increase my enjoyment of a challenge (so I'm currently operating on the assumption that DnD is still a good game system for me to use)...

    Let's ban Teleport!

It might be more a matter of not-reading than a matter of reading, actually. :) Although I have to admit was partly taken in by the high level of static in the thread as well earlier. ;) I can very well see style points in favour of certain campaigns - certain campaigns, not all of...

    Let's ban Teleport!

Really? :) Wind Walk isn't instant by my understanding of the term. Neither is Transport Via Plants: unless you are staying within an area that has the same kind of vegetation you'll have to hop from area to area in stages. Yet both are mentioned in your first post as spells to be banned...

    Let's ban Teleport!

While it is nice flavour-wise to imagine a 'nice slow world' that has no fast-travel magic available, I'm not sure how you would provide a fun high-level game in it. Saeviomagy has asked the right question: What types of high-level challenges are there that not allowing fast-travel magic...

    The DM's Screen

I don't use DM screens, so no. :)

    Let's ban Teleport!

Nice. :D The majority of one high-level group I've played in didn't care for PCs' fun, they were always talking about urgent things to be got done. (Yup, talking. Not necessarily doing them.) The amount of time we could have saved by actually _travelling_ to places instead of sitting...

    Let's ban Teleport!

At least in my game, yup. NB: Midnight orcs don't ride. Not horses, anyway: the dumb thingies can't seem to be broken of their terror of them. Hm, Teleport, Dim Door, portals & co. are unavailable in Midnight (as written) because access to all other planes is cut off, not so much...

True that - of course they have to catch you first. :)

    Let's ban Teleport!

Interesting discussion, I always like to see different people's stances on play style. Personally, this thread strongly confirms me in my feeling that I'll want quick-travel magic to become available in my Midnight game at higher levels. :) (Yeah I know. Blasphemy. Then again, most...
