Well, changing it from untyped damage would be easy enough as it is in current D&D terms obviously negative energy. And you should not be able to gain HPs from undead or constructs, they have no life to steal after all.

Why not? You can with VT right now. Not how I would recommend burning spell slots, but if that is what you want to do . . .

True, but it also means that your d4 HD wizard has to get in close enough to touch your enemy (or you burn an extra spell for Spectral Hand) and the damage stages up pretty slowly at 1 die/2 levels, but it is getting pretty impressive around 14th caster level.

I know with 4e coming out next year, fine tuning 3.x stuff is not of great importance but surely someone must have an opinion on this? Thank you.

Yes, in fact one of the characters in one of my campaigns is nearly an opium addict. But it is usually a players choice to bring such things in, while they are there in the campaign I rarely bring them into a plot.

The ability to bring characters (or anyone) back from the dead is usually unobtainable in my camapigns. So, I am careful about killing characters but sometimes they set themselves up to be killed and that is that.

Or give non-wizard half-elves something that allow them better defense against magic (from having grown up around it). Perhaps Iron Will or a similar feat?
