looking at the campeign goals, taking mage bane would be a smart choice, if you see the ability as overpowered, talk to the dm and nerf the ability, to a +2 ability, like say the Psy bane ability from the XPH

i prefer 3rd lvl for fresh campeigns, if we wipe (tpk) i prefer to start over on the other side, the side we first fought with characters at the same lvl as the deceased. and to finish the story around lvl 20 (in the lvl 17-23 range) for short fun campeigns i prefer lvl 19
