One System To Rule Them All!

d20 I can get my friends to play d20. Good luck trying to talk them into anything else. It was like pullling teeth to get them to play DC Heroes (3rd Ed) with me supplying all the books, but even after that the game wasn't much fun.

    Would YOU play AD&D 2e?

I dropped out of RPGs altogether when 2e came out, and came back with 3.0. I'm not playing 2e. Not even if Monte Cook himself were to DM the game.

    Holiday Themed Sessions

Our Halloween special... ... I dug out my copy of "Betrayal at the House on the Haunted Hill", and we played 2 games of it before going back to our regularly scheduled RPG. Great fun!

    Charles Ryan on Adventures

Charles, I don't think that's true. For an adventure to work well, you need a really solid grasp of the rules --- better than the typical 3rd party game designer. (Note that most of those can't explain the difference between CR and EL and why the difference is important) Here's an example...

    Charles Ryan on Adventures

Except the DM buys more books than all the other players combined, on average. I know I certainly do! On top of that, if there's a compelling campaign product, it's not unheard of for the entire group to buy the product together (by pooling their money), and then having the DM run it!

    What's The Deal With Balance?

If you don't think balance is important, you could try a game of monopoly where the other player starts with $20,000 and you start with $10. That'll teach you real quick. (Much faster than reading these posts :-)

    Would you buy pre-made campaigns?

I'd buy it in a second if it was any good. I'm now running the Banewarrens, which is a hoot. As far as I'm concerned, make it super-deluxe and charge an arm and a leg for it since the market will be relatively small, but is composed of super-busy types who have the money to spend.

What's the secret behind D&D's ability to sustain long term play?

And D&D supports DMs better than any other game out there, where it seems like it's pulling teeth to get anything published adventures for any other games (since they don't sell, apparently), while for D&D we get a Dungeon subscription (enough adventuring to get your group from 1st to 20th) for...

    In Praise of Low-Level Campaigns

I find that high level play is much more demanding for the DM than low level play. As PCs gain power and flexibility, they come up with plans, strategems, and ideas that many DMs are not prepared to deal with fairly, hence the preference by DMs for lower level play. The last 1-20th level...

    the spontaneous divine caster

I'm running a campaign using the spontaneous divine caster right now, and it's going very well. The cleric player has picked Lesser Restoration and wants Restoration as one of her higher level spells as well. My biggest problem with the cleric is that every expansion to the cleric makes...

Try reading The Banewarrens. When the module got in my hands I wanted to drop everything else and run it RIGHT NOW. It's an amazing module.

(Proper Poll) Rate T1-4: The Temple of Elemental Evil

I ran my first 3E campaign on this module (yes, I wrote the original ToEE 3E conversion that's still floating around, having been converted to 3.5E). It's not bad until the second or third level of the dungeon, then it started to get a little repetitive. I eventually had to break it up with...
