    Custom Class - Unarmored Defender

Glad you liked most of it! I'm going to be letting my player test it out for the first time this weekend and he seems pretty excited. I should probably develope a few more daily powers, but most of the examples of powers that are impacted by class specialization are encounter powers. I agree...

    D&D 4E Diseases and other long-term penalties in 4E

I suspect they will last until a save is made with that save only being made at certain intervals or if healing is applied. Of course, the effect is going to be different by disease or spell. We've seen the succubus kiss as a way to maintain a long-term effect and there was someplace I read...

    Will all spells be attacks?

There are a couple utility powers that have been previewed and they are all Level 2 powers. The only one that comes to mind for me is the rogue power that allows them to shift several squares once per encounter. Other than Utility Powers, mage cantrips (light, magehand, etc) and rituals, some...

    Custom Class - Unarmored Defender

Absolutely! I really want to save some of the more signature abilities for later levels though. Things like Flash Step will need to be split out into offensive and defensive maneuvers. Likewise, the ability to jump super-high, walk on air and what amounts to teleportation will be implemented...

    Custom Class - Unarmored Defender

Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback on my Shinigami write-up earlier. This is my edited version and I think it incorperates everything I tried to catch the spirit of the class and the balance and style of 4e. Yes, I realize that it is difficult to write up a new and balanced class given...

My attempt at a martial controller: The Monk

Awesome! Definitely could use another controller! Aren’t you worried about a melee char with no armor? I’m not sure Insightful dodge and twisting defense will be sufficient. Do we even know how much damage an unarmed attack does? I’d recommend defining it here. I’m afraid this won’t change...

    understanding skill challenges

As far as I've read, the purpose of skill challenges is to give structure to otherwise structureless non-combat interactions. Consequently, I plan on simply declaring them if my pc's ever seem at a loss to come up with a specific course of action. Other than that, designate a skill challenge...

    Dragonborn Warlord (Inspiring) Premade

I was hesitant to include the +2 for consistency sake since all other abilities are either explicitly stated or "already included". Since the bonus is an aura, I figured the clearest method would be to let the player add it in. In retrospect, I probably should have included it for the Warlord...

    Dragonborn Warlord (Inspiring) Premade

I have remade my prior Dragonborn Warlord premade character Shakrath in light of the new rules. This version is an inspirational type. For my own ease, I used an Excel format, so I appologize to everyone who lacks an appropriate reader. If I have time, I'll rewrite it into something more...

    D&D 4E Suggestions for building 4e adventures

My last several battles took place in caverns at least 2000 sq ft.

No more ubiquitous dump stats !?

Every character has 3 stat dumps. They just now have a bit more choice as to which they want to dump. Strenght/Con is the worst in that any non-melee character will dump Strength. Dex/Int isn't quite as bad, but unless we see some additional impact of the choice seems almost irrelevant for...

My 2v2 Arena group does Warlord/Warlord and it's REALLY strong except against double controller opponents.

    Custom Class: Shinigami

I really appreciate all the feedback here. I probably made a mistake in posting this as I did without also adding some of my reasoning and long term plans. Most of the concerns seem to be centered around the following topics: Class Creation at Our Current Level of Ignorance Couldn’t agree...

    Custom Class: Shinigami

Help! I plan to start a new campaign in June, but have been running a few pre-release games in the meantime to give my players a taste of the new mechanics. Unfortunately (or fortunately), one of my players is extremely excited about the idea of playing a character in the style of the...

Why does epic level play entail treating death as a "speed bump"?

This seems to be the rumor. I've heard that the epic utility powers allow you to come back from death and actually gain an advantage from doing so. This might be a daily resource, but I suspect the limitation is probably going to be something else. Maybe GM subjective like the raise dead spell.

Why does epic level play entail treating death as a "speed bump"?

As an offtopic: did anyone ever find the followup articles to that first one?

Which rules do you tend to forget or flub?

Charging was probably the biggest point of confusion for my players and I. We had to reread it a couple times during the game. It's not that the rules are extremely complicated, it's just that they're very different from previous versions. Make sure they're aware of new ranged attack rules...

    Power Sources purely cosmetic?

Power sources are very useful as a mechanic. Effects that target effects need a context by which to filter their targets. Even if the context is a bit arbitrary. Arcane for instance is quite the hodgepodge of effects and forms. Though by far the worst offender, it's not the only one. Divine...

    At-Will Powers

All at-will powers will probably scale to 2[W] damage at level 21 like the rogue ones do (as shown in their preview). This makes me think that the player will probably have only a few at-will powers to select from at level 1 and while he might be able to swap them out, they will probably not...
