    D&D 3E/3.5 Which 3.5 spells aren't improvements

Except for casters with Bracers of Armor, or casters who wear armor, or casters who want to improve their AC vs. incorporeal attacks. ;) Agreed, but Shield has benefits (like the protection from Magic Missiles) that makes it a better choice than Mage Armor in some circumstances. YMMV. *shrug*

Hypersmurf's Rules of the Game Thread

Doh! :o Agreed. But this is good technique by the Sage - to draw together the obvious aspects first, before delving into the exotica of the subject.

Hypersmurf's Rules of the Game Thread

I guess HS has been too busy being a Moderator to give us loyal denizens of the Rules Forum our weekly dose of RotG critiquing. So to help him out I'll start with "looks good so far..." ;)

Informal DM Survey: Stat Generation Method?

Players: DMG Standard 32 Point Buy This tends to result in an array of 16,14,14,14,12,8 although there is some variation here. The only character to ever start with a 17+ (before racial adjustments) was a Halfling Sorceror. My players prefer to have several decent stats rather than one monster...

    Spell: Alter Self

This will work in FR, but not yet in Core - unless your DM has allowed in (or created) a race of flying humanoids.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Which 3.5 spells aren't improvements

That depends on what line of effect you choose. It is not too hard to manuever so you can angle the spell in 3.5 so that that it has an effective 10 ft width for most of its length. Just fire it straight along a line of squares & it effects the squares along both sides of the line. For...

How big are your house rule changes?

Almost no house rules. We played for 3 years with none, but this time around I changed the price of the Mithral Chain Shirt to 4100 GP! *gasp* I am also allowing in some stuff from UA. So far Weapon Groups & the racial Paragon classes are in. I thought about reintroducing facing, but decided...

    Spontaneous casting

Spontaneous casting of cure spells doesn't increase the casting time, although applying metamagic to a spontaneously cast spell would. As Bauglir noted, there is little reason to memorize a spell that a character can cast spontaneously unless it is a domain spell. This allows clerics to...

    divine spontaneous casting class ???

No. The character gets both domain spells at each new spell level. At the odd levels, these domain spells are the only ones he knows.

Best 1st level adventure out there

N1: Against the Cult of the Reptile God by Douglas Niles is indeed a classic first adventure. In fact the first 3E campaign I ran was a conversion of it. I am still using plot threads from N1 3 years later in my present Greyhawk campaign. (If the mad cleric of the Dark Reptile Cult was able...

How did you find EN World?

Put me in the (apparently) large group of people who have been lurking here since before the release of 3E. I found the site using a search engine from work & would visit periodically to check on rumors about the new edition. I became a regular in December of 2000 when I finally bought a...

    Mithril Armor and proficiency.

Nothing that I can recall either. But there is usually a thread about this subject every month or so, usually when a player of a Bard character scrapes up just enough GP for a Mithral Breastplate (or a Barbarian character for Mithral Fullplate) & is hoping not to have to spend a feat to use it...

    Mithril Armor and proficiency.

Exactly how we run it too. A Mithril Breastplate may be as easy to manuever in as a regular Chain Shirt, but a character who only has Light Armor Proficiency stll doesn't know how to wear it effectively & thus takes the non-proficiency penalties. Since this the Rules Forum, let's quote the...

    Run, trip, and dexterity checks

It might not feel right, but it is the rules. When a character loses his DEX bonus to AC, he loses his ability to lose his superior quickness to defend himself in combat only, not the other myriad advantages that DEX bestows. It might seem frustrating from this side of the issue, but if the...

How would you defend against this?

No, no, no. Everyone knows that the "right hand rule" is superior. Except against drow of course - they're tricksy & will use it against you - in which case your advice is valid. ;)

Non-CR based XP system from Unearthed Arcana

What shilsen said; :p While the idea of class-based XP awards sounds good in theory, it is malicious in practice. Take the 2E class XP awards for example. By rewarding stereotypical play, they penalized players who used their classes in creative non-stereotypical ways. For example, in 2E...

Are your gaming friends exclusivley "gaming friends"?

Put me down as another one who will only game with friends. My present group of players are all people with whom I spend time doing other things. 3 are in a fantasy football league with me, so we are friendly competitors during football season & keep in touch about football matters during the...

    Weapon Finesse Errata?

Not that I am aware of. But in this circumstance, it isn't necessary. The UA monk fighting styles use the bonus feats that the PHB monk has, & these bonus feats do not require the monk to meet the prerequisites. UA just expands the limited choices of feats from which the PHB monk can select...

Are there official rules for "lack of sleep"?

There are some other situations that induce fatigue. Off the top of my head I can think of being at high altitudes (hourly Fort saves to avoid) & going without sufficient food or water. I expect that there are many more. Anyway, I think that it can be inferred from the rules that characters...
