    Magic missile too strong?

It's problematic comparing magic missile damage to that from a human fighter with a greatsword. Many have mentioned that there's no hit roll, no DR, no incorporeal chance. Also, often there's no real possibility of retaliation. You're better off comparing it to a bow than a greatsword, and it...

    Do spell-like abilities require concentration?

PHB p. 180 has slightly different wording. It says "A spelllike ability has a casting time of 1 standard action unless noted otherwise in the ability or spell description." So I read it as saying that if the spell description says it takes 10 minutes, the spell-like ability takes 10 minutes.

    Rule ponderings by me..

If you read the part in the "magic" chapeter of the PHB describing conjuration [summoning] spells, it's more clear about the requirements.

DMG: Why are potions of Enlarge Person and Reduce Person listed as 250gp?

The most probable cause I've heard is that it's a error. That's what they cost in 3.0, and nobody caught that the table was wrong in 3.5 before it was printed.

Do mindflayer mindblasts affect constructs and undead?

It doesn't mention in the Monster Manual whether it's a mind affecting effect or not, but like fnork said, it doesn't practically matter. Constructs and undead (as well as elementals and oozes) are immune to stunning.

    PHBII: Retraining?

I try to keep aware of that. Seeing as existing characters get a good portion of their wealth in liquid form (coins, gems, art) and that new characters are subject to roughly the same purchasing rules as existing ones, I don't think the inequity is big enough to pose a problem. The general...

    PHBII: Retraining?

But does every kid who wants to be an astronaut become one? I don't think the metaphor is even appropriate, since people are far more flexible than D&D characters. It's a player empowerment game, which according to the DMG 2 at least, is an important part of what D&D is about. It sound like...

    PHBII: Retraining?

I think the concept they are going with here is less "entitlement" and more giving the players more power. Immediate actions give the players power to do something out of the normal turn structure. The retraining rules give players power to undo past mistakes. I have sympathy for your...

    Two Interesting Magic Item Questions

At level 15, unless I'm missing something, you're just as well off having a +2 animated heavy shield as having a belt buckle that can cast the shield spell by itself. Unless you're a monk or plan on being hit by a lot of magic missiles or something. That is to say, I don't see how having this...
