Gary Gygax has passed. RIP beloved father of RPG's. (merged)

Gary was a true gentleman, to coin his phrase, a Gentle Writer, and he will be missed. At the expense of sounding truly geeky, I hope every time those funny dice hit a table somewhere, Gary is smiling somewhere else. If one must have a claim to fame, giving a gift of enjoyment to millions...

    How do you pronounce Drow?

I always pronounced it to rhyme with row, but years ago -- Gen Con 1988! -- my friend (who pronounced it to rhyme with cow) and I cornered Gary Gygax in a bar and asked him. He said (somewhat apologetically, as he knew he was settling an argument), "I've always said 'drow' [cow]."

Why WOTC shouldn't have gotten rid of the Dungeon and Dragon magazine

The online versions needed to be a home run ... and they didn't even make it to first base for me. :\ As expected, the content posting has been haphazard, printing out articles a pain, and I find myself not even wanting to check if there's something new there. I'd prefer the certainty of a...

An excellent creative decision, Mr. Gygax. And my players hate you for it... ;)

WotC Replies: Statements by WotC employees regarding Dragon/Dungeon going online

Agreed. (And I can't believe I've returned to these boards after a day to find people still chewing over these numbers! Holy smoke! But I respect your tenacity. Do you guys ever sleep? ;) ) As previously mentioned, I'd like to see the hard data used by Paizo (and don't get me wrong, I...

Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

I totally respect your viewpoint Vigilance. The ruthless businessperson inside me understands some of the business reasons behind this (I've worked in the publishing business for 15+ years, and I'm aware of increasing paper costs, etc.) but, while I'm certainly no Luddite, an online magazine...

Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

<Laughs.> It's cool. I don't come to the boards to debate. This decision affected me greatly, and I can say that as the expert on me, and so it's my right to be upset (and, dare I say it, express it online). Others don't care a whit about the mags, or prefer to read in-depth D&D articles online...

Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

The 2005 Gen Con Indy had an attendance just over 25,000. Half a percent. Guess they better cancel that too, eh? ;) Point is, numbers are relative. Saying there are 5 million players (and I love Paizo but I'd like to see their hard data) doesn't mean these are all 3e players or, more...

Why Wizards Has Lost Touch w/ Its Base

While I respectfully see the point Maggan's trying to make, I go with Ulric here. To kill off two popular, venerable icons with no more than a small blurb on their website that leads to a press release is disrespectful to the readers and contributors of this 30-year-old institution. (I fall into...

A New Respect for Adventure Writters

Thanks Drawmack and all for such a good-spirited thread. Many moons ago I wrote a (25,000 word) adventure for Dungeon and much more recently I wrote a (nearly 50,000 word) adventure for Goodman Games, and it's always fun but it's also a great deal of work -- far different than jotting down...

So what is your favorite module, ever?

I'd have to say: The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (which I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned yet) -- a truly creative dungeon romp, if a bit trap heavy -- or Hall of the Fire Giant King, the giant lair against which all others will forever be judged. So hard to just pick one or two!

What old books do you still own? The first OD&D box anyone?

Oh my. I've got way too much to name -- at one point TSR should have given me a stock report I owned so much. - Many, many Dragon & Dungeon magazines - All original 1E books including the Cthulu Deities & Demigods (soda stained unfortunately) - Most original 1E modules including all that...

    Most mispronounced monster names

Regarding the "drow" pronunciation: Way back at Gen Con '88 (I had to check my signed Player's Handbook to verify the date) my friend & I were having an argument about this. I insisted drow rhymed with row (as in "row, row, row your boat") and my friend Mark insited it rhymed with cow. We...
