Feb '09: What are you reading?

I just read Eye of the Labyrinth by Jennifer Fallon. Like the series so far (published around 93-95). It's technically science fiction, but low-tech, almost like fantasy. Weird planet with two suns which just emerged from a period of darkness with people in the grip of a ... perversion of...

How can an enemy get past the Fighter?

I'm pretty sure that's not how the game works. Isn't it one OA per other character's turn?

November '08: What Are You Reading?

That's one of the things I actually found refreshing about Midnight Tides. That, plus one of the characters is pretty damn funny. :) I just finished reading In A Time of Treason, the sequel to In The Eye of Heaven by David Keck. Pretty good, gritty fantasy, about a son of a noble forced to...

    Fantasy authors worth the reading.

I really would like to read some of Sanders' works but I just haven't been able to FIND any of them. The one story of his that I've read was in Lord of the Fantastic, the tribute volume in honor of Roger Zelazny. I thought his story there was great, and quite funny. On that note, I want to...

Bump? Would it be helpful to post a character I've been working on? Give more of an introduction?

DM for hire! [Toronto and area]

I'm in the target area, but... I just can't help but feel that making the DM into an employee would create some weird group dynamics. I could see myself happily pitching in to buy the DM dinner every week, but a paid wage? I think it could get weird. (Hypothetically, anyway)

    Swashranger

Lots of swashbucklers in films have used just one sword, or a sword and a cape in some situations, or even two rapiers. I don't think twin rapiers would be a bad route to take with a ranger (unless I'm missing something) and would be pretty stylish. Rogue with the main gauche to enable Two...

    Toronto DnD4th Group Forming

I'm interested in a game, Josh! I'm at the upper end of your age range (hit 35 last October...) but so long as that doesn't make me too long in the tooth... :) -Chris

I'm stuck in a library; what book should I read?

I know this is much too late, but in my limited experience, college/university libraries generally have some (possibly old) fantasy novels buried in their literature sections. If you get stuck there again, you might try looking up Dunsany and other old authors.

    Wuxia novels?

Wuxia: Yes, but not easily available in English, so far as I know. One of the prolific Chinese authors has the name in English of "Louis Cha". There is a multi-volume translation of his book "The Deer and the Cauldron" but when I finallyy tracked this down, I found it to be pretty much a...

    Like 300? Please read this.

Ehh... I finally read Gates of Fire a couple of months ago. It was pretty good. The idea of Spartans philosophizing in long passages about the nature of fear and courage quite frankly struck me as highly unlikely. The Spartans weren't actually laconic. (Laconic... Laconia... Sparta.)

    Fantasy Recommended Reading

One of the first posters mentioned Patricia McKillip. She's one of my favourite authors but to be honest the Harpist trilogy... going back and rereading it... it's obvious she was a less experienced author at the time. Her more recent books, _Od Magic_ and _The Tower At Stony Wood_, amongst...

Yarr! Reccomend me some pirate-y books

In the humour category, The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists by Gideon Defoe A loopy 19th(!) century adventure involving a band of scurvy pirates, Charles Darwin, Darwin's man-panzee, and an eeevil English Bishop. Short, utterly demented, really funny. I haven't read the sequel, The...

Can I Make My Games More Like Pirates of the Carribean?

Another issue is that D&D arguably does not provide enough skill points. For instance, a fighter cannot afford all of Climb, Jump, and Swim without an Int bonus! And that's still leaving out Balance and Tumble and probably other physical skills I'm momentarily forgetting. Not to shill Iron...

    101 Fantasy Government Secrets

38 - the Prince had to kill several whores and discovered he... liked it. Now he sneaks out every few nights, but it's to leave another dead body in his wake. 39 - The election for Mayor was rigged by a shadowy group with unknown interests. (Not just 'bought', but someone interfered with the...

The Return of Sword & Sorcery Cinema?

I really don't think of (World of) Warcraft as swords & sorcery, but it might be good, in any case. I'll be happier about these projects when they're being FILMED. The ratio of semi-developed versus actually filmed movies is pretty high.

    The Dresden Files

Oh, and yeah, I'm also a big fan of the Dresden Files. I haven't read the one that most recently came out in hardcover, but everything up to that, I liked. I think I somehow started with book 2, and then went back and read book 1. I think the first was weaker than the others.

    The Dresden Files

One option: www.abebooks.com (used bookstore website for many many stores) Search for "The Garrett files". It was a hardcover omnibus of the first 3 novels. Some of the copies listed are quite expensive but there are others which are more reasonable.

A killer puzzle that makes me want to pull my hair out.

Sympathies for the O.P. In a 7th Sea game I was in, our characters were individually confronted with a riddle (presented to them by a demon). Failing to solve the riddle tainted our souls. I would take the GM aside and explain to her that riddles and mysteries are very hard to run...

    [May] What are you reading?

I just finished up The Bonehunters, by Steven Erikson (Malazan book 6) Dead Beat by Jim Butcher (darn you people who can afford hardcovers!!! I want the next book!) I'm now re-reading The Waterborn by J. Gregory Keyes.
