How can an enemy get past the Fighter?

Well, sure ... having the right feats and equipment makes "can't get past me" tactics better.

But any fighter can:
Hit you for trying
You still get -2 to hit the wizard (for being marked)

So they're doing the same job, just not quite as well as a fighter with the right stuff.

Well, since the fighter gets a combat challenge whack (if you're marked) if you shift ... it's almost as nasty a prospect as move + charge.

but isn't quite as bad, since it is not an OA, the fighter does not get to add his wisdom modifier and doesn't stop your shift like he would a move.

Yeah well, CC isn't as good as OA in this situation 'cos they're trying to fulfill the same function.
CC + Shield Push is a godly combo though (and available at level 1) ...

Awesome for protecting the wizard by having everyone involved being adjacent to each other.

Taking a swing at the wizard in that situation = getting smacked by the fighter, then getting pushed away, which invalidates the triggering swing entirely.

Can y'all tell?
I love sword+board fighters.

I think your only good option is to use a skirmisher. A lot of skirmishers have an ability where they can move, attack an opponent, and move again without drawing OAs.

(This might force you to hit the fighter on your way to the wizard, which probably means you'll still get crushed.)

Or maybe use lots of weaker monsters; the fighter simply can't stop them all.

Okay, now I feel dumb for completely forgetting about charge. :o
Why does the DM care if the monster gets a little whack over the nose for shifting? The fighter player gets to feel bad-ass for actually using his class ability, and the wizard is about to get some excitement heading his way.

It's a monster, they're meant to die. Their job is to spark excitement and fear until they kick the bucket.
What he said. That is exactly what I'm thinking, here. After all, either way the fighter is going to hit the monster at any point, so might as well make it the most exciting.

There's another option that hasn't been specified:
Fighters only get one OA per round. So, monster A incurs OA from fighter, then monster B goes, moving with impunity.

I'm pretty sure that's not how the game works. Isn't it one OA per other character's turn?

The above is correct. But if you have all the monsters goon the fighter, even if the fighter can hit one with CC, they can all shift away and goon someone else.

Yes, one OA per other character's turn, but one Combat Challenge attack per round since it's an immediate interrupt. A fighter could potentially stop all moves past him in a round (if he hits with all his OAs), but he can only interrupt one shift or one attack that does not include him.
