Ridding D&D of All Races - Multiple Choice Poll

I like Gnomes and in the game I GM Gnomes are a prominent race, far more common than Elves. Furthermore there are no Halflings currently - I can't stand them but my players seem to like them so I have let them know that I will include them at the appropriate point. It seems to me that this...

Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?

To answer the original question, in the campaign I am currently running I heavily restricted the number of races that players could, initially, choose from. This was by design as the campaign was going to start in a fairly isolated region and gradually move out to the wider world where more...

Everyone, Tell us about your games, please!

1.) How many players in your group? Including myself, we have up to 7 regulars but our games (due to schedules) tend to have a rotating core of up to 5. 2.) Do you DM? Yes. 3.) Do other people in the group DM, and how many? Two others in the group regularly GM but only 1 does so for our group...

D&D 5E Characters that annoy you (and/or the players who play them)

The only thing I find annoying about some players is the failure to complete a character concept. One of my long-term players is especially guilty of this. Once we were playing a series of adventures in the Al-Qadim setting. He created a proud nubian warrior that he claimed came from a noble...

D&D 5E Alternate ability generation rule

Many of these systems seem overly complex. How about: 1. The player can assign a 16 to one stat and a 14 to another. It's purely their choice where they place these. 2. For the remaining stats they roll 3d6 and place them where they fall. 3. Apply race bonuses as normal In my eyes this has two...

Rolling for Ability Scores or Point Buy

I always seem to roll (comparatively) badly but one time we played with characters that our GM had rolled. My wizard had 3 stats under 8 (STR, CON and WIS) and her highest was a 14 (INT). The other characters were a little better but still on the 'low' side from what I've seen in most games I...

    Whither the gnome?

Personally I think Gnomes should be a "core" race again, replacing the Tolkein-abomination that is the Halfling race. Not too bothered which variety although the Pathfinder style got my vote (narrowly above the 4e variety).

Playtest - Hobgoblin Warlord Sushi Party

Is this the output from an Excel macro or something? If so it's quite interesting as a number crunching excercise. Otherwise it's not particularly useful for ascertaining how the characters were in play.

Rule of the Three (1st of May)

As someone who thinks that feat bloat is one of the bigger problems with previous editions I actually like this. As a DM or a player I'll just have to know the feats that are included in the themes in use rather than having to be hit with the whole "system mastery" elements of the game.

    Help for my player

May I recommend that he plays a Gnome Feylock. All the teleportation powers mentioned by other posters combined with the Gnome's "Fade Away". I've been playing one of these recently and I had to make a chart listing all the ways the character gets concealment, teleportation or invisibility...

    Armor Class and Defense

Years ago I tacked a similar "armour as DR" system onto the 2nd ed rules (with the addition that all successful "attacks" always dealt 1 damage so that swarms of knife-wielding goblins were still dangerous). It was OK but raised the question of what hit points were and whether or not there...

    Expanding the D&D brand?

Considering that they've got every other licence under the sun, surely D&D Lego must be an option. You could build your own dungeons with the bricks and have Lego monsters.

D&D Race You Hate the Most

The thing that I find most interesting about this poll and the ones along the lines of "which races do you want to see in 5e" is how well Gnomes do. As someone who has enjoyed playing Gnomes for over 30 years this does convince me that WotC were wrong to not include them as a "core race" in the...

    New DM Tabletop Question

Our group uses minis for the PCs (we buy and bring our own which makes it cheaper for the DM) and I found a tub of large (2cm across) tiddly-winks in a variety of colours at a toy shop for about £6. Those and a whiteboard pen for writing the monster name on allows us to field a LOT of monsters...

D&D 4E What level have you achieved in a 4E campaign?

I've been DMing a 4th. Ed game for the past year and my first campaign ended last week with the characters all at 8th level. This took 38 sessions at 3 hours each session. Technically they earnt enough xp from the last adventure to put them at 9th but they didn't want to continue with those...

    Rogues get 5/level

Firstly, VERY nice breakdown - lovely to see someone approaching this logically. I would agree that 20+CON for a fighter and 8+CON for a wizard 'feels' right ((2x max current hit dice) + CON)). I'm not so sure that 6/level thereafter for a fighter 'feels' right though. Although I'm obviously...

Healing Surges: 6 + Constitution modifier

Up to the individual DM of course but I'd allow that. After all, it's only 1 hit point now instead of (potentially) 1 hit point per level. It shouldnt be game breaking and may even give characters that dont have Con as a primary stat a reason to stick an extra point in it.

    Rogues get 5/level

That would have been my guess as well, but because it is equivalent to; Average (round up) + 1

    Races of YOUR World

Glad you like the idea. Apologies for being off-topic but mapping isn't as much of a chore as you may think. Most campaigns don't last more than a decade, during which the changes won't (usually be large). Only 'start' and 'end' points are fixed to any degree of certainty. Plus this allows me to...

    Races of YOUR World

I'm been running my homebrew world for years now and the race selection hasn't greatly changed. With 4th ed. I'm taking the opportunity to update some of the lesser used areas to be "home" for the new races. The game world is one that does not have a "static" size, it changes over millennia...
