combat question (my players stay out...)

The big question is: do they know they are going to fight a hydra? If they can plan for it, they can equalize the battle a lot. -Do they know *how* to kill a hydra? If they know about the fire/acid to keep it from regenning heads, that might help. A bit of research or visit from a friendly sage...

    Drow love

Depends on which god/dess she worships. Elistraee - She'd be okay with dating a mere human, probably. Vhaerun - If the human was evil, maybe. Or their slave. Don't think it would be a love relationship. Lolth - She'd be okay with sacrificing the human to her dark goddess. That's kind of like...

What are the most useful languages?

Elven Dwarven Draconic As for the rest, it depends on what you are going to run into. Goblin, orc, giant for on-plane stuff. Celestial, abyssal, demonic for off-plane. Sylvan if you are going to be in the forest a lot. That said, might it be easier to get a permanent Comprehend Languages spell?

Uncanny Dodge - Flatfooted vs. Denied Dex to AC

....You two make my head hurt.

Uncanny Dodge - Flatfooted vs. Denied Dex to AC

It's also important for those of us playing ninjas who have Sudden Strike rather than Sneak Attack, though it also pertains to rogues.

Uncanny Dodge - Flatfooted vs. Denied Dex to AC

Yikes. Glad I'm not a ninja in your campaign. As it is, I'm going to have to clarify/negotiate with my DM. Many thanks to everyone for your perspectives on this subject, I really appreciate it.

Uncanny Dodge - Flatfooted vs. Denied Dex to AC

The main reason for *my* confusion is that I often see "flat-footed" used interchangably with "denied dexterity bonus." For example, the Acrobatic Backstab trick from the Complete Scoundrel reads: "Move through foe's space to render it flat-footed." "Flat-footed" as defined in the PHB refers...

Uncanny Dodge - Flatfooted vs. Denied Dex to AC

I have heard the "never lose AC bonus" explanation as well, which is why I thought I'd ask. So, if the opponent was blinded and then attacked, would he keep the dex AC bonus or not? Meaning, I guess, does the attacker count as invisible if the defender with uncanny dodge is blinded? Does anyone...

Uncanny Dodge - Flatfooted vs. Denied Dex to AC

Is there any way to deny a character with Uncanny Dodge their dexterity bonus so that you can land a Sneak Attack or Sudden Strike? I figure if there is a way past it, somebody here has come up with it at some point. If there isn't a way past it, how would you suggest a stealthy-infiltrator...

The Official Adaptive Style Debate Thread (Continued from elsewhere)

Per the Customer Service on the WotC boards (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=683775), looks like you're right Riga. Silly me, I was only reading what was in the book. It strikes me as a very unbalancing way to do things, and if I was DMing a game I probably would be very hesitant to...

The Official Adaptive Style Debate Thread (Continued from elsewhere)

Okay, so we are on the same page, consider this scenario: A 1st-level Swordsage gets into battle. He has readied maneuvers A, B, C, and D. He uses A and B and realizes that A and B would be much better to use than C and D in this situation. He has Adaptive Style and spends a round changing C...

    unarmed ninja?

Bingo! I'm glad you found something you liked! Where are you planning to take this, concept-wise, if I may ask?

The Official Adaptive Style Debate Thread (Continued from elsewhere)

(This is continuing a debate that has begun elsewhere. Feel free to weigh in. I'm copying and pasting a bunch of stuff from the other thread so you have some context.) In several places I have seen people talking about taking Adaptive Style and using it to recover all their expended maneuvers...

    unarmed ninja?

Everybody out of the pool! RigaMortus, Squire James, Tarek! Atten-shun! You, me, Rules Forum in a separate thread, now! I am starting the "Official Adaptive Style Debate Thread" in just a minute. We can continue this there. We have taken enough of Sorvahr's thread with this debate! On topic...

    unarmed ninja?

Note: This is the last time I'm discussing this issue in this thread. It isn't fair to derail it with our arguement. If you care to continue it and bring other folks into the debate, we can start a separate thread. Readying Maneuvers on p. 38 - "Maneuvers require preparation in the form of...

    unarmed ninja?

Aye, that is a limiting factor. Complete Scoundrel helps with the ki pool issue a bit with the new feats, and I've mentioned some ways of getting the sudden strike in without using the ki pool. It is no different than any other use per day ability. You just have to plan it out. Incidentally, I...

Most Unexpected/Funny Ways the PCs Killed A Creature

We had a grey bag of tricks and were first-level characters defending a city from hobgoblins. Well, an alleyway, so that the hobgoblins wouldn't get sidetracked. Anyway, we made a barricade of wagons and debris and since we didn't have a tank we all grabbed our ranged weapons and climbed onto...

    unarmed ninja?

Well, the smokestick bit was something my ninja pulled the other day to get out of an ambush. I didn't like the odds, so I used Sleight of Hand to get a smokestick out of my pocket without the fellows with crossbows pointed at me seeing it and was suddenly in a fog cloud centered on myself...

    unarmed ninja?

If you go ninja, look into ki feats and the Complete Adventurer, Warrior, and Scoundrel. Anything that seems centered around rogues, monks, or assassins can probably be worked in. If you have a mellow GM maybe you can get him or her to let your ninja and monk class levels stack for determining...

Tome of Battle: Bo9S classes in actual play?

Okay, is everyone else reading the text of the Adaptive style that I am reading? I have seen multiple references to using it for getting all of your spent maneuvers back as a full-round action. What I am seeing is: "You can change your readied maneuvers at any time by taking a full round...
