Ranger should have been Martial Controllers

Another reason that strikers are represented more heavily in the class list is that party balance can typically support two or three strikers for each defender and leader in the party.

Fighter: Still the King of melee?

You don't say! I have something else to postulate... Get ready for this... It appears to me that the ranger is, overall, a better 'ranger' than the fighter! 1v1 PvP duels are just about the farthest thing from relevant to the balance of this game that I can imagine. The game is designed...

Game in one hour - will this 3-PC party be OK?

My first session was also with a Fighter, Warlord, and Rogue, and things worked out fine. Of course, the Fighter was Dragonborn and the Warlord chose Scorching Burst as his Half-Elf extra at-will, so we had a decent amount of AoE at our disposal as well.

    Opportunity Attack Rules Clarification

If your player still has trouble understanding this, try explaining him to it like this: When your character moves, they don't just blink from square to square. They take their time hustling from square to square and, logically, some of their time "moving" is spent in the square they start in...

    Multiclass Feat Weirdness?

Clerics don't cast spells, only warlocks and wizards do. Clerics have "prayers". So, right there, your whole argument pretty much falls apart. ;) Seriously though, congrats to theNater. You're owning this thread. Basically, if you're not willing to re-write fluff to suit your gaming...

Another "power sources" thread (this time without speculation)

That gets you involved in a mind/body/soul distinction which carries a lot of philosophical implications that aren't necessarily a part of the D&D cosmology. The body/soul/animus distinction mentioned in some of the preview material with reference to certain undead creatures could make sense...

Another "power sources" thread (this time without speculation)

Ki seems a little cheesy as a power source to me, as does psionic - though it might be possible to justify the latter. All of the other power sources seem to have ties to the cosmology of the world and its features. Arcane power comes from the Feywild, Divine from the Astral Sea (or at least...

What kind of PC game do you want from 4E?

It's awesome to see almost everyone voting for a turn-based game, which is what I've wanted from most of these titles. NWN and company have been kinda fun, but don't really feel like D&D as much as they could. The fast pace also means that you end up fighting a gazillion Orcs for 8 experience...

    Fighter/Paladin Multiclass Marking

Okay, thanks - I was expecting to see something in the classes chapter on that. However, since Combat Challenge is a class feature and not a specific power, it would seem to me that the benefits of Combat Challenge would apply to any creature marked by the Fighter/Paladin, regardless of the...

    Fighter/Paladin Multiclass Marking

So you're saying that these powers which mark targets effectively do nothing? The only effects of being marked that I'm aware of are listed in the entries for Combat Challenge and Divine Challenge.

    Fighter/Paladin Multiclass Marking

Hi everyone, I'm playing a Fighter in a game of 4E that our group recently got going and I was giving consideration to multiclassing to Paladin at some point for roleplaying/character development considerations, but then started looking into the mechanics of it and had a few questions pop up...

    D&D 4E 4e and save or dies.

Monsters have "save or die" abilities for the purpose of giving players who invested in abilities which boost their saving throws or otherwise help them shake off such effects a place to shine. Players don't need these powers. Just about every class but the wizard has more options than before...

    Attribute scores don't make sense

I definitely see where the OP is coming from, but I still think the attribute system has merits. It does still allow for some meaningful customization - a Paladin, for instance, has the option for a secondary stat of boosting Wisdom to affect his or her minor benefits, or boosting Strength or...

    firing into melee combat

I agree with the rule as written. All the penalty ever amounted to in 3.x was forcing ranged characters to take a feat to negate it.

D&D 4E 4e -- Is The World Made Of Cheese?

Why does Lizard hate freedom so much? You know, they call it "Kick in the Door" because they can't just kick through the wall, right?

    They Killed Alignment

It's also incredibly easy to houserule if you don't happen to like it.

    They Killed Alignment

This. Also, if the new alignment system "killed your CN rogue" then you don't know how to roleplay. You're still fully able to roleplay all of the same personalities and moralities that you played before, you might just have a different name for them now, and there won't be magic circles...

Seb's Ranger Guide - Complete up to Level 20

You're right; I must have glazed over that on my first reading. I saw the different attacks notated separately in certain abilities later on, but missed it in the early attacks. I'm not sure it's going to be worth dropping your implement to the ground as a free action and drawing a bow or...

Seb's Ranger Guide - Complete up to Level 20

With regards to your multiclassing section, why would a Wizard ever want Twin Strike? Assuming the Wizard is an elf, it still seems silly for the Wizard to pull out a longbow to fire off a couple shots when their dexterity is probably quite low.

Seb's Ranger Guide - Complete up to Level 20

I'm pretty sure that Two Weapon Fighting is a better feat choice overall than Bastard Sword proficiency or Weapon Focus. Bastard Swords will reward you slightly more on crits, but TWF is much more stable damage and it doesn't pigeonhole your weapon use - you don't have to worry about a wasted...
