I've been working on something similar that I've been calling a "background template". Seafaring, Urban, Poverty, Aristocratic, Barbarian, Desert, various racial communities. Probably a choice a feat from a list of two or three, skill bonuses, and some starting equipment.

Metaphysics aside, there's nothing wrong with a cleric's religion focusing on something other than a god, as long as it isn't just a cop-out to avoid roleplaying. Look at some of the eastern religions. If you can find a copy of Aria Roleplaying, there's a great chapter on designing the origins...

Vaguely On-Topic... The scenes from the Lord of the Rings inspired me to associate ether with invisibility. The idea has been bouncing around in my head along with the astral sight and projection rules in Shadowrun. Not sure how I'll use it rule-wise yet.

Well, ugh. I was hoping since I saw the Mythus stuff, Aria would happen eventually. I don't want to kill my precious copies scanning in the charts and tables, and finding additional copies has been unsuccessful.

Anyone know where I can find the schedule of upcoming ESD's? I looked around svgames.com, but didn't find anything for the future. I'd almost pay cover price for ESD's of the Aria books.

Excessive? Not by the rules. I think the rules and encourage it, and that's what should my changed. I'd rather see a single "fighter" class, and use something like templates to provide the differences between fighter/ranger/barbarian.

I liked it, but I'm a Gygax fan. It's certainly not without flaws. It's no more obtuse than the first two editions of AD&D. But it's most definitely not rules light (or even rules medium). Most people get disgusted by character generation. But I've found the game runs really smoothly...
