CustServ on "What is 'an attack'?"

Notice under making an attack it says ALL ATTACKS, thus if something does not follow the process it is not an attack. ;) Bottom line, unless you make an attack roll against a target, you are not attacking. This creates some wierd things with powers like Hunger of Hadar which is not an...

Plate armor for 1st level Fighters

My question: What previous edition allowed Fighter to buy Plate at level 1? At least now it is meet the prereqs, spend a feat, get your armour versus, adventure for a level or 3, get your prequalified plate...

    Weapon Powers and improvised weapons

Improvised Weapons by any means are Weapons. They are weapons by default definition of having "weapon" in their description, they are weapons by the rules, they are weapons, period. The unarmed "qualifier" is to remind people that unarmed is not something "super special" it is simply a type of...

    Combat takes too long

QFT. On hit rates, we were doing the 30-50% mark to start with, now we are in the 60-80% range after the group learned how to "chain" or "stack" abilities to get bonuses going hitoff. First attack by the party usually has about a 50% chance of hitting, but by the third attack by the party...

    Combat takes too long

solomon, if the all players depleted all their powers (which means at least 8 rounds have gone by) there is no reason that there should be any enemies left standing, barring bad rolling, and I mean like 75%+ of the rolls not hitting anything and not doing damage on a miss. 400 hp for level 30...

    Combat takes too long

I"m a little confused solomon, there is no way your party would get through an encounter at level 15 in 1.5 hours in 3.5, without some great rolling on the PC"s part, and some poor rolling on the DM's part. Sure the combat would not last more than 2-3 rounds, but timewise 1-1/2 hours would be a...

    Combat takes too long

We generally play 5-6 hours, have been doing so for the past 8 years give or take. Under 3.x we would be lucky to get 3 encounters in an evening, most the time we would get 2 combats into an evening, though it was not rare for only 1 combat to happen. With 4e we are getting in 3-4 encounters...

How do multiple damage types work?

OK, just to make it easy on me ;), let's say you have a Power which does Fire and Radiant Damage and it does a total of 20 points: 10 points are Fire Damage, if creature is Vulnerable to Fire you add Vulnerable Value to damage, if it is Resistant than you subtract the Resitance Value from this...

CustServ on "What is 'an attack'?"

Bad wording on my part, you can have Target without Attack, you can't have Attack without Target, nor can you have Hit without Attack and thus can't have a Hit without a Target. Hierachy stuff...

    Staff Implement x Staff Weapon

You don't have to use a Staff as a weapon if it is an Implement though; You can never use a Quarterstaff as an Implement....

CustServ on "What is 'an attack'?"

Just cause: "Attack Power" is a defined thing, it has it's own "entry in the database". "Attack" is also a defined thing, it too has it's own "entry in the database". "Attack Roll" is yet another defined thing, it has its own entry in a different database than either of the two above...

    D&D 4E 4E without Magic Items

Problem is, that only solves half the problem... My solution: Give them a +1 to Attacks, Defenses, Damage, and an extra +1d6 point of damage every 4 levels. (yes this gives them a +7 at 28+, it should make up for quite a bit of the power loss from magic items at those levels.)

    Zones and forced movement

Slide: There is no restriction on the direction you can move the target. You cannot slide a creature vertically. (So I guess there actually is a restriction...) Since "the direction" is singular and not the directions plural, I believe you can't do a push-pull dance on a slide. More...

    Treasure parcels

I have a chart somewhere which works out a basic distribution system, in a party of 5 it basically works where everyone shifts "down" one slot with each magic slot being an actual slot and then a fifth "shadow" spot being created which equals magic item = level worth of gold, the rest of the...

    Grading Encounter Attack Powers

More specifically, these threads should be about combinations anyway. Since the number of times a power is used in a vacuum is so rare that it doesn't practically exist. The combinations of feats, powers, class abilities, and racial abilites within a group of 5 is what should be graded. But...

    Cloud of Knives kills minions?

Because I'm slightly masochist... Minons don't take damage from powers which do damage on a Miss. Note Miss is an actual definer of a power, it is not simply something that happens on an attack roll. If the power has no Miss definer in it, then it does no damage on a Miss, so by extension...

    So, Does this Work?

Steely Dan, your player is correct, magic weapons impart keywords to the powers in which they are used with IF that power has the Weapon Keyword. Let's take a look at a Frost Weapon, normally it is only a +x weapon, when the At-Will ability is triggered it imparts the Cold keyword to any power...
