New to the boards and to D&D

Hey, welcome aboard! Hope the game continues to be fun for you, and all of that. Patrick Y.

Another RPG company with financial difficulties

Do you run it flat fee + royalty, or reduced per word rate + royalty? This is just a curiosity thing, really. I've heard of publishers paying out both ways, and the writers seemed happy enough - though I've never heard if they got more with fee + royalty than they would have per word. And I've...

Complete Adventurer, Spells and Special Abilities

I think Complete Adventurer has some good stuff, but I also think it will be a book that will prove more useful, generally, when people start up new campaigns, or create new characters for existing campaigns. The multiclass options are good, but they're the kind of thing that are nice to have...

    Character Creation Time?

I usually do it in about 5 minutes, assuming it's a 1st level character. If it's a spellcaster/psionic character, it takes a few more minutes to come up with cool spells. If I start throwing in 3rd party stuff, or stuff outside the PHB, add another 10 minutes or so.

    Let's Talk Blue Rose

Well, Blue Rose is about as cool a product as I thought it would be. I'm already prepping up some game stuff for it, and expect to see a lot of interest from my players, if I can ever round them all up. The magic system is strongly geared towards my preferred flavor, so I'm excited about that...

    Quintessential Books - What's good?

I think that's about it. The Quint II line was MUCH more strict in terms of content and style. Basically, every Quint II book had to have Career Paths (with a specified format of 1 path per ability score, plus 3-4 paths based off skills), 10 level PrCs for characters of 10th level and above, a...

    Quintessential Books - What's good?

Well, it was written to be the Quintessential Monk, not martial artist. It is absolutely written with the monk class in mind, and material for other classes would mostly have to be altered to fit - it's also written for the 3.0 monk class, meaning it's built with the original mechanics of the...

"Modern New Age Mythic Game": RPG design by formula

The quote in your second post has been discussed, and countered multiple times in the thread you farmed it from. As has your assertion that Nobilis is "pretentious". In fact, there are 80+ posts on the subject right now, and the thread is still on the front page. For those interested in...

How many crits/sneak attacks have you suffered in one session?

I got hit for 8 in one round, once, while playing a barbarian. OUCH. The character lived. HAHA. And then got disintegrated at the start of the next round. Not my most shining moment.

Preview of Dungeon 121 in Issue 120

Wonder how much mention there will be of the Exorcist in this article. Hmmm.... maybe a feat for spiderwalking and headspin + vomit combo. So. much. potential!

Adventurers: "We don't want your kind around here."

That your description doesn't bring to mind the X-men, it brings to mind the Wild Bunch, or Bonnie and Clyde. In other words, not "misunderstood heroes", but "unrepentant sociopaths".

Adventurers: "We don't want your kind around here."

I've done it before. It plays out very similarly to a typical modern western, really, where everybody simultaneously fears the wandering gunslingers, and yet depends on them to get the dirty work done. It works best in worlds where monsters are either relatively rare, or where "legitimate...

    Green Ronin's Advanced Players Manual?

Women don't wear cargo pants and long sleeved shirts on your Earth? She looks plenty feminine to me - as a crazy guess, I'd say the drawing looks like a very stylized Nicole Lindroos. But I could be wrong. Anyway, looks like a pretty good book, all around, though I'm not that excited by so...

Players Whining that they Should be able to Buy Magic Items

There are two potential issues I see here, that make it unjustifiable: 1) It's not a simple matter to "shop around" for a game/GM. Roleplaying isn't exactly an expansive hobby, and most people tend to play with their friends, rather than hop from game to game. Gaming usually isn't like street...

Sorcerors no magicals in exchange for spellfire & esch. materials

I wouldn't. I've never had a sorcerer make a magic item anyway, and if you assume access to standard levels of magic, it's not like he won't be able to get them from other sources easily enough anyway. A "drawback" that doesn't have much effect isn't a balancing drawback.

Races of Eberron Cover Art and Petition

Interesting. I prefer the old cover, as it's more striking, but I think I know why it was changed: 1) To promote sales outside of the Eberron base. By this point, Eberron's been around long enough to have caused a bit of a divergence in audience - as with FR, there are those who don't buy...

    Three Cheers for Patrick Younts

Well, I've printed my freebie copies on heavy stock paper, and hole punched them into a three ring binder. That's worked out pretty well. With other PDFs I've purchased, I've occassionally put a fold of clear tape on the edges of all the pages. Basically, I just put half the tape on one side...

    Three Cheers for Patrick Younts

Thanks, guys. This thread came along just at the right time - it's like the stick that beats back my natural gloomy melancholy. I'm glad to hear people are able to use some of my work in a way that makes things more fun for them, and for their players (and killer pumpkins keep heroes...
