Character Creation Time?

Urrrkk.

It takes me 15-20 minutes to do up a complete character from scratch and that is not using any electronic aides.

Since most responders before my post seem to average about an hour, maybe I am missing something.....

I CAN create a 1st level PC in 3rd edition in 10 minutes - this assumes I need something NOW, and I'm not goofing off with him, trying different concepts, tweaking every little thing, etc. If I'm tweaking a first level PC, anywhere from one hour to six hours. This applies, I find, until about 6th level or so.

Creating a high-level PC on the fly, let's say spellcaster, with or without PRC's, about an hour. If I'm enjoying the process, and have the time, then anywhere from six hours to 12 hours, in bits and pieces.

I have also found that PCGen and other char-gen software does not alter this amount of time - but what it DOES do is make my choices more optimized and sound, as I can compare options more quickly.

I'm assuming NPCs must be easier. Getting a new char ready to play, and about the only thing that hasn't given me fits is his name. Been a month of niggling over details with this guy. Completely tossed one concept two weeks ago, and worked up something fairly new. Checked my old sheet last night, and found that the new char after all the reworking was pretty much the same as the old one.

Pretty normal for me, though...

Assuming I know what I want, a few minutes. Less than a minute if I can use my computer.

Plus the time needed to equip the character, which can take, like, 3-30 minutes, depending on level.

Most of my characters get created from somewhere between 10 minutes and an hour without any electronic help and with all the options from tons of other books. It all depends on how into the character I get. Heck, I can make a 20th level character with stuff from other books and such in a half hour.

I've never understood the 'long character creation' thing. It never takes me long, and I enjoy it too much to notice, anyway. :)

As others around, I take approximately one hour to create a character. I would just emphasize it takes longer in d20 Moder/Future than in D&D 3.5

So how long does it take to generate a character?

For me, maybe an hour if I'm really thinking about it. Even if it's a higher level character.

I usually have an idea of what I'm interested in, ask for some quick opinions from friends, and write out the character.

Other people's experiences?

i can generate 100 characters in an hour for OD&D(1974)

with 1edADnD about 10 minutes
with 2edD&D or 3edD&D about 2 minutes
with 2edADnD about 20 minutes
with 3edADnD or 2000ed about an hour
with 3.5edADnD or 3.11ed for WOrkgroups about an hour
with 4edHackmaster about 1.5 hours.

I usually do it in about 5 minutes, assuming it's a 1st level character.

If it's a spellcaster/psionic character, it takes a few more minutes to come up with cool spells.

If I start throwing in 3rd party stuff, or stuff outside the PHB, add another 10 minutes or so.
