Fiction, rules, or setting first in a core book?

Other. A few pages of setting, then the rules with more setting interspersed. Note that if you can't get me hooked on the setting with a few pages you'll probably lose me if I have to slog through more of it! NO fiction, or see below. One thing that I always appreciate, but which hardly anyone...

    Wizard Staff Mechanics

Perhaps I'm just being dense here, but if you're going to replace the familiar with a staff, why not give the staff the familiar's abilities? Or, at least, some of them. (Obviously, some won't make sense, but those can be replaced.) Familiars give the caster something (bat = +3 Listen checks...

As a player, do you enjoy moral dilemmas and no-win situations?

Moral dilemas, yeah. The harder the choice the character has to make, the more memorable the session. No win situations, absolutely not. I play the game to have fun. IMNSHO no win situations are not fun!

If you were stranded on an island w/ 3 books...

Either non-D20 gamebooks (like the 5th edition Hero System) or thick novels. The only D20 books I have are the three D&D core books.

Questions about Flails, Maces & Morningstars book

Ok, I don't have the book, but I agree with you completely. Whoever wrote this is... descriptively challenged. The only pistols in a walking stick that I'm aware of are single shots. Usually muzzle loaders. The cane handle is the grip of the pistol, with a drop-down trigger. They tend to be...

    Box Of Wonders

This item is seriously crocked. They'll open it every day. That means they will end up either doing horrible things (too many Evil rolls) or become too powerful (by getting too many powerful items). Trust me on this, it will happen. And no, it doesn't matter how low the percentages are, they'll...

    Are gold coins universal?

I use the silver standard, but 1G/S/Cp = 1G/S/Cp. Usually. On rare occasions there will be ancient coins worth more to the right people. I've also hit players with counterfit coins. (Gold painted lead works a treat!) And for really big amounts of money to be portable there are letters of credit...

    where would you go?

Well, lessee... Money? Clothes? What could I take with me that would make my life "there" comfortable if I stayed for a while. (Gosh, I seem to be fresh out of Gold Pieces!) Assuming unlimited funds and the ability to actually communicate with the residents, someplace where I can get a new...

Help Me "Tweak" the Hundred Years War and Black Death

It'll probably be a bit pricey. My old paperback is U$ 9.00 for almost 700 pages. But it's fascinating reading, and not some dry recitation of just facts and figures. (Although there are plenty of those.)

Help Me "Tweak" the Hundred Years War and Black Death

Well, it didn't end feudalism in Europe either. It just got the ball rolling, as it were. It still took a few centuries...

Then there is always Blaise, Blaze, Blayze, etc. (Didn't Merlin use one of these sometimes?)

Help Me "Tweak" the Hundred Years War and Black Death

I cannot recomend that you read Barbara W. Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century" strongly enough. Plague, war, famine, peasent revolts, crusades, the catholic schism: the whole nine yards all in one century. (Well, the actual Hundred Years War lasted longer than that, but...

    Why did you start DMing?

We'd play a little D&D, a little Traveller, and a bit of other stuff. But I wanted to play some non-Glorntha Runequest. No one else wanted to GM it, so... That was over 25 years ago. Not GMing anything at the moment, but I will again. Count on it.

Cake: What kind do you like?

Um, Boston cream pie is a cake. As for me, a moist, fudgy, chocolate cake with not too much frosting (chocolate, of course) does it for me. So what if I've got diabetis? I'll die happy!
