I'll finish running the numbers later but I no longer think the sorlock is actually going to consistenly stay ahead of the battlemaster till level 17+ and even then level 20 might have the battlemaster catching up. The Sorlock does have a better allotment of control effects, so he probably...

Now let's do the sorc 13/warlock 2 Sorlock Section in red will be updated later. To match the control of the Level 15 Battlemaster (5 d10 dice, GWM, Crossbow Expertise, Heavy Crossbow, Max Dex) you need to use . That also takes up 3 of your 18 actions, you still potentially have 18 bonus...

Now let's do the sorc 9/warlock 2 To match the control of the Level 11 Battlemaster (5 d10 dice, GWM, Crossbow Expertise, Heavy Crossbow, Max Dex) you need to use 2x level 3 slots targeting 3 enemies and 1x level 2 slot targeting 2. That also takes up 3 of your 18 actions, you still potentially...

Okay. I don't think it's as good of control at that point. Though if you are willing to use some sorcery points for quicken to help ensure enemies get pushed back into the web if escaped (or maybe other nearby ones that weren't in web initially) as you suggest below. I agree doing that would...

I think it just takes people explaining how archers are good. And that’s by focusing the comparisons on the mix of damage and control they can do.

Might want to recount your slots after taking off 2 level 3 and a level 2 slot to match the battle masters use of menacing 5x per short rest. You don’t have the spare slots you think you do. So no extra beams that I didn’t already account for. No slots for fireball either. In any event, I’m...

Yea it’s similar. The one thing I find with casters is that when they are doing ‘good’ damage they aren’t doing any control. Their damage typically requires a concentration spell and their control typically does as well. That’s one thing I dislike about soulknife as well. Lack of magic...

Now let's do the sorc 5/warlock 2 To match the control of the Level 7 Battlemaster (5 dice instead of 4 now) you need to use 2x level 3 slots targeting 3 enemies and 1x level 2 slot targeting 2. That also takes up 3 of your 18 actions, you still potentially have 18 bonus actions (you won't use...

Now let's do the sorc 4/warlock 2 To match the control of the Level 4 Battlemaster you need to use 3x webs. That also takes up 3 of your 18 actions, you still potentially have 18 bonus actions (you won't use all them at this level). Your strategy was to use your control spells and then dump...

Now let's do the sorc 3/warlock 2 To match the control of the Level 4 Battlemaster you need to use 2x webs and 2x tashas (or you could convert points to another slot, but that's mostly going to be a wash). That also takes up 4 of your 18 actions, you still potentially have 18 bonus actions...

Let's start with the sorc 2/warlock 2 To match the control of the Level 4 Battlemaster you need to use right at 2x tasha's laughter or similar per short rest (for our purposes i'm assuming there's 2 encounters per short rest, so 6 encounters total). That essentially means 1x tasha's laughter...

Agreed No idea how you are getting this Or this Each enemy targeted by a spell that can prevent them from acting that provides a repeated save/attempt to end the condition is worth about 2 uses of frighten. The math on this is below. Each use of frighten has a 60% chance to cause an enemy...

D&D General Lego Sandbox vs Open Sandbox (and other sandbox discussion)

To me the difference in sandbox and linear is more, can the players go out and find interesting and relevant things to do no matter what path they choose vs there is only 1 main path for them to follow, possibly with a few side quests and possibly with a few alternate sequences to read the paths...

Even something like a level 7 sorlock in a single encounter day with 4 rounds barely matches the Heavy Crossbow battlemaster in damage while maintaining similar levels of control. And it literally takes virtually all the sorclocks resources to accomplish that.

By level 11 I'm confident saying you have enough resources to quicken pretty much every round as well as use a level 3 control spell once per short rest. That's when I think the sorlock and battlemaster actually break even. Though I think the battle master can outdo the sorlock at some levels...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranged Builds Thread

I'm trying to put this into perspective. Assuming the standard 60% chance of success. A battlemaster using 5 dice on menacing attack will fear an enemy 3 turns per short rest. A reoccuring save spell like Tasha's will disable an enemy around 1.2 turns on average (assuming a 4 round combat)...

A few points in no particular order. 1. It doesn't matter what you 'can' do if you don't have the resources to do it often. That's the Sorlocks biggest problem. As you level that becomes less and less of a concern, but it doesn't even remotely get mitigated enough for a long time. 2. The...

Exactly, so long as you can expect enough misses for the Sorcery points you have then seeking is the same damage addition as quicken without the bonus action requirement. At least while you have 2 beams. 1. Web isn't a good DPR boosting tool, great control spell though. The enemy gets an...
