I think the argument is that, if a basketweaving skill is on the list, some players will be tempted to take it, and then will try harder to apply basketweaving to various situations. And that's roleplaying? Maybe? OK, I can't follow the argument either.
Maybe it's that actually investing...

Direct damage is for classes that can't do better things.
I don't DM often, but I did this semester for my group. Some things I really liked:
Making a world and characters that my players could interact with and talk about. My players met the various people in the world, heard what they had to say, and picked a side to support--and the fact that they...
I think it's a weretiger being flanked by the dude and the Ardent's (?) summoned dragon thing. On the other hand, I'd be thrilled to have a weretiger race. Can you say, fourth PHB3?
Unless the class has several useful secondary stats (wizard, fighter), it's two stats all the way. My Shaman, for example, needs both Wis and Con as high as they'll go. Likewise, Str and Con were just the best stats to boost for my Barbarian, even though other NADs suffered.
If the Minotaur is an ideal Battlemind, that would make the class Con primary, Str and Wis secondary. Excellent Fighter, Warden, Barbarian, Druid, Shaman and Invoker MC possibilities...
I appreciate WotC's efforts to look less war-obsessed by changing the Warmind into the Battlemind--but now they seem to just be thinking too small-scale! Poor WotC, you can't win.
(Excited to find out what the Divine class is, now.)
That has to be a Compendium mistake (the loss of Abjure Undead and Divine Guidance)--it's not mentioned in the update PDF or the Char Builder. I don't really care about losing the possibility for Leather, but I would be seriously pissed if the Channel Divinity powers, of all things, were nerfed.
Foulspawn, Swordwings, Fell Taints and Sorrowsworn are all 4e-unique, I believe. (You can tell from the compound words!)
Debatably, 4e Archons and Eladrin.
I like 4e a lot, but I do have some issues, being on both sides of the screen:
-Tiny attack and defense modifiers thrown around--I can keep track alright, but the new players have trouble keeping it all straight and doing the math. Our Ranger took Group Quarry (a conditional +1 to damage)...
Isn't the implement bonus an enhancement bonus in both cases?
Also, the first enemies-only damage roll area at-will? Don't Wizards have enough nice things already? Show Druids some love, WotC.
*head buried in hands* OK, so it's better than a remove from battle spell. Great. I'm very happy for you.
Look, I'm not championing the 4e effects system here! 3.x is rocket launcher tag, 4e is padded sumo, great, I don't care. Other games are entirely irrelevant to this discussion! I only...
First off, I'm not talking about the use of these spells from a DMs-vs.-players perspective--the DM has and will always have a zillion ways of taking out players, most of which aren't even accessible to the PCs. I'm looking at them from the perspective of the players, and the tools that are...
Seems like it's supposed to be one per breath weapon, from the flavor.
Also:
I like this picture, but it illustrates how screwed up the whole D&D ecosystem is. Deer are already megafauna! A world can't possibly support the dietary needs of hundreds of dragons!
That Orium dragon is badass. I like how it gets a minion buddy that the PCs don't want to kill--and then gets a second when it gets bloodied! Maybe I'll have my PCs stumble on an excavation soon...
Today I ran a halloween-style session for my players. They ran into a vampire, a werewolf, a mad scientist animating stitched-together corpses and a mummy, and each player got an appropriate ability from one. I got to write out little notecards describing their foul "curses", and what they let...
The whole point of the spell... is to reinforce class imbalance? Work with me here. (Not to mention that Dominate Person is probably a better choice against fighters/other "brawn" types, anyway.)
And please, tell me what these highly situational instances are where Baleful Polymorph is a...
You're not understanding what I'm saying: The Pathfinder devs have already shown they don't want HP as a resource to become irrelevant after 9th level. This is in light of their changes to previous save-or-dies like Glitterdust and Finger of Death. Your and my views on the change are...
And if you can turn someone into a toad permanently with one save, you've totally bypassed HP as an ablative resource. It's literally the same as Finger of Death, just with "polymorph" in the place of "death effect"--oh, and two levels lower.
Besides, I wasn't saying to cut these spells...
