Be sure to let us know how this turns out! :)

    Kits vs Prestige Classes

Check out True20 -- it reduces classes down to three broad ones (warrior, expert, adept), and lets players customize them through their choice of feats (1/level). Alternatively, the three 'generic classes' in Unearthed Arcana (warrior, expert, spellcaster) do pretty much the same thing (but not...

    True 20 Fantasy

Rydac (who generally lurks here at Enworld, but sometimes posts) is trying to put together a game now (I met him through Enworld). Since he knows more people, I'm letting him do the work. ;) He ran a campaign about 1.5 years ago, and some of those players are still around. Anyhow, he's...

    Missing base class concepts (link?)

If you use the 'generic classes' (warrior, expert, spellcaster) from Unearthed Arcana, you'd have a version of 3e somewhat similar to True20 (especially if you also used the 'simplified skill system in UA, which is pretty much identical to the skill system of True20).

Smart vs. Intelligence and Combatless Roleplaying Sessions

Wow. It's depressing to realise that there are people out there who think this way. How sad.

    Would YOU play AD&D 2e?

2e is my least favourite edition, but with a good DM and group, it could be fun -- especially if you were using one of the great 2e campaign settings (Dark Sun, Birthright, etc.).

    Missing base class concepts (link?)

I rather dislike the proliferation of base classes in 3e -- it seems somewhat contrary to one of the alleged strengths of the system, viz. the options and variations available within each class. I agree. I think that the way to go is with fewer, more flexible classes. E.g. The three 'generic...

Who still plays older versions of D&D?

The same poll is over at RPG.net: http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=225374 There, B/X/RC D&D is kicking major arse (40 percent support -- way more than any other version).

GM's: what was your first module?

B2, like most folks here. It came in my Holmes edited Basic Set (the one with the Sutherland cover). I reran part of B2 a few months ago with C&C. I was surprised how good it still is! :)

Who still plays older versions of D&D?

Fine. You've made it clear that you don't like the RC. Thanks for crapping in the thread. (Thanks too for implying that the only reason why people like the RC is because of 'rose coloured glasses' -- which is complete rubbish, btw.) :\

GR's 'Psychic Handbook' as an alternative magic system

See this: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=4967&SRC=GreenRonin (Also, there is at least one review available here at Enworld.)

    True 20 Fantasy

I hope that there's a nice variety of settings in the print version of the game. At least one fantasy/S&S setting would be important, I think. (I know that BR already exists -- but an 'edgier', more Conan-esque setting for True20 would be nice.) I'm looking forward to getting it! :)

GR's 'Psychic Handbook' as an alternative magic system

I have True20 and would prefer to GM that over 3e any day. I'm actually curious about ways to modify 3e to be more like True20, in case I can't find players willing to try an entirely new system (even though True20 and C&C are both pretty similar to 3e, some people can be stubborn). A new...

    True 20 Fantasy

Thanks for the info. I'm both an impatient and lazy GM -- hence my fondness for C&C. Since I'm looking for a game with a different (less-D&D, more S&S) flavour for a potential campaign, True20 could be my cup of tea.

FLGS in San Fran or Palo Alto area?

San Francisco: Gamescape on Divisidero. Berkeley: Games of Berkeley (right by the Berkeley BART station). Oakland: Endgame (near the 17th street BART station, iirc). Games of Berkeley is the best one in terms of selection, though all three stores are good. There used to be a Gamescape in Palo...

GR's 'Psychic Handbook' as an alternative magic system

I'm curious to find an alternative to the standard D&D magic system for a possible future 'Swords-and-Sorcery' style campaign. I actively dislike the magic system as it exists in 3e, and suspect that 70 percent of my past frustration in DMing 3e might be eliminated if I could find a simpler...

    D&D Novels- best authors?

I agree -- Paul Kidd's books are funny fluff. (I love the part where the pixie needs to keep taking 'enlargement potions' in order to 'get it on' with the main protagonist.) Good reading before sleep. Beyond that, though, anything else written for 'D&D' is complete shhiiitte. The only decent...

    True 20 Fantasy

Thanks for your reply, Denaes. I'm actually much more interested in True20 for Swords and Sorcery games (Howard/Leiber/Moorcock stuff). The 'D&D-style' question is not my main concern -- I was just curious. (For D&D-ish games I'd use C&C in any case.) From what you said, True20 sounds pretty...
