Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

Do you provide any forewarning or hints at the danger level to an encounter? For example, you could permit the party members entering the room an Insight check to realize that it is in fact quite dangerous, and permit them to change their course of action. You could also have deep claw marks on...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

Make the weight whatever makes sense in your campaign. If 1 oz. fits better with your intuition of how long it should take to quaff vs. a bonus action, then use that. By the time the encumbrance of potions matters (i.e., if the party buys many of these), they probably have access to Heward's...

Level Up (A5E) A5E Warlock Rules Discussion - Eldritch Grasp + Synergies

First you fire your Eldritch Blast, and then you can attempt to grapple with Eldritch Grasp one target that was affected by your Eldritch Blast. There's nothing specific in the LUA5E wording that says the creature has to make multiple saves vs. grapple on the same turn if it was hit by multiple...

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

How often is the party of PCs getting ambushed? If they're ambushed, things can go bad very quickly. In that sense, I think the D&D 2024 change to make surprise just advantage on initiative rather than getting a full round of additional attacks off, makes things less deadly / more predictable in...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

For those with realism issues, consider an equipment item along these lines: Medical Bandolier, sturdy leather weighing 1 lb unloaded + 1 lb with the following items loaded, 350gp cost (365 cost in total when summing together the individual components). 3x Healing patch restoring 2 HP, that...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

D&D 2024 lists potion weight as 0.5 lb (i.e., 8 oz.). That does included the weight of the container. So, maybe just 4 oz. for the liquid itself. 3E D&D and 5E D&D use 1 oz of liquid for a potion, which makes more sense for the quick bonus action chugging thereof.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

Part of the realism problem is how short a round is in modern D&D. 6 seconds is very little time, vs. 1 minute in AD&D. There are advantages of the longer original round, where it is assumed to be the outcome of an exchange of blows, rather than each side only getting one or two blows. That...

D&D General Wild Shape: Inefficient or Useless?

Wild shaping is one of the much trickier set of choices to make a character work well. It very much depends on what forms your DM lets you use, and whether the setting is suitable for making good use of it (outdoors is better, vs. tight dungeon spaces which may restrict you to a medium or small...

D&D General Wild Shape: Inefficient or Useless?

Providing you can hit multiple opponents, spells like Moonbeam, Call Lightning, and Conjure Animals are more effective in combat than just wild shaping. Moonbeam and Call Lightning both require an action to activate each turn, so there's no benefit to being wild shaped in such cases. Conjure...

D&D General Wild Shape: Inefficient or Useless?

I have been playing an A5E Druid with the Skinchanger archetype, essentially the equivalent of the 5E Circle of the Moon. In my opinion, there are a couple of things that the A5E Druid does really well to make being wild shaped more useful: you can talk; and you can cast range self or touch...

DDAL Elven chain armour. do you need light armour proficiency?

I have been planning to get an Elven Chain Shirt made for my Imp familiar to boost their AC from 13 to 16. No proficiency required, which is the only way that works. :)

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Archetype Curse scaling & Herald multiclassing

Yes, I assume so. There's no specific rules added for additional exertion points that Fighter or Psyknight get that specifies that they're only recovered on a long rest. That does make sense regarding their exertion pool. Divorce it from the spell slots. It is still good, as they get a whole...

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Archetype Curse scaling & Herald multiclassing

A possible problem here is the assumption that 1 spell slot level = 2 exertion points. This works at lower levels, but at high levels it means either that they have too few spell slots if you use exertion instead, or they end up with too much exertion - if they were to channel all those spell...

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Archetype Curse scaling & Herald multiclassing

The proposal that I made along these lines avoids buffing Herald. But it is more fiddly, as the exertion cost for spell slots does change as Herald levels up.

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Archetype Curse scaling & Herald multiclassing

Another approach that I would be tempted to adopt is moving all spell casters to a short rest refresh mechanic, and for half-casters like Herald this can equate to an 2x proficiency bonus per short rest exertion mechanic if you fudge the numbers appropriately: For spell levels 1 through 5, you...

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Archetype Curse scaling & Herald multiclassing

That doesn't work, unfortunately. With the approach that you're suggesting, when they level dip into Fighter, they still get the additional proficiency bonus exertion points (i.e., 2x proficiency bonus in total), which has a similar problem to before, just not as bad. You have to give the...

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Archetype Curse scaling & Herald multiclassing

It should be a short rest, if you don't want Herald/Fighter-dip issues. I am wondering if it makes sense to have the efficiency of conversion from exertion to spell slots vary with Herald level. Something like this initially: Instead of spell slots, Herald gets 2x proficiency bonus exertion...

Level Up (A5E) What are your common house rules?

The way we play it is as follows: If you have Darkvision, you can see stuff within that radius. If you don't have Darkvision, you need a light source, else you are effectively blinded. The difference vs. the rules as written is that we are not applying the disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception)...

Level Up (A5E) What are your common house rules?

Another one, probably playing it this way by mistake ... In darkness, within Darkvision range typically 60', no disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) vision checks, and skipping the -5 penalty on passive Perception. I am sure this is a mistake by the rules-as-written, but I don't recall our DMs...

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

There are plenty of things that were ghastly about 1E. Level drain. Imbalance between classes, including poor implementation of multi-classing. Non-Human level limits. Random rolling for ability scores and hit points leading to imbalance, players wanting to repeatedly reroll ability scores, etc...
